VP, Functional Design Engineering leads the Functional Design Engineering & Strategy pod within the Foundations team in the Cloud Center of Excellence. This role serves as a critical translator between enterprise architecture and engineering teams, converting high-level designs into implementable, code-driven solutions aligned with the AWS Well-Architected Framework. The successful candidate will curate a reference pattern library consisting of Terraform module bundles, architecture decision records, and proof-of-concept builds while managing a globally distributed team of senior engineers. Key technical requirements include expertise in AWS infrastructure, Terraform Cloud, GitHub Actions, and integrating agentic AI capabilities like Bedrock and Claude Code into engineering workflows. The role addresses the challenge of transforming complex architectural intent into standardized, scalable cloud infrastructure within a regulated financial services environment, ensuring that high-level designs become actionable, well-architected technical specifications for internal teams.
Translate high-level enterprise architecture designs into detailed, build-ready engineering specifications and reference patterns.
Curate a cross-functional library of Terraform module bundles, reference architectures, and architecture decision records (ADRs).
Lead design reviews, architecture review boards, and technical deep-dives across multiple infrastructure teams.
Develop and mentor a globally distributed team of senior cloud engineers across the US and India.
Act as a player-coach by contributing directly to Terraform code, proof-of-concept builds, and peer reviews.
Integrate agentic AI capabilities into engineering workflows for automated review processes and pattern generation.
Serve as a senior incident commander and technical escalation point during 24x7 on-call rotations.
Manage the full employee lifecycle including hiring, performance management, and career development for the pod.
What we're looking for
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent work experience).
10+ years of progressive technical experience including 5+ years in cloud infrastructure or platform engineering leadership.
5+ years of hands-on production AWS experience in a multi-account landing zone with 4+ years authoring Terraform in a private module ecosystem.
5+ years of experience as a direct people manager for engineering teams of at least 5 engineers.
5+ years of experience leading and participating in 24x7 production on-call rotations in a regulated environment (financial services preferred).
5+ years of experience translating enterprise architecture into engineering designs with mastery of the AWS Well-Architected Framework and technical writing.
Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or an MBA (preferred).
Relevant certifications including AWS Security Specialty, Data Engineer, Solutions Architect Professional, Terraform Associate, or CKAD (preferred).
