TL;DR · Supplier Development Engineer, Supply Chain

The Supplier Development Engineer, Supply Chain (Launch Site) joins the Launch team to support Dragon and Falcon programs. This technical role focuses on manufacturing and quality for machined components and assemblies used in rockets and rocket engines. You will serve as the primary technical point of contact for assigned parts, resolving high-impact manufacturing challenges at supplier sites to mitigate risks to launch schedules. Key responsibilities include leading containment activities, conducting design for manufacturing reviews, managing new product introduction processes, and driving production part approval programs. The role requires expertise in machining operations like milling and turning, as well as proficiency in GD&T, Lean, Six Sigma, and quality systems such as AS9100. You will utilize tools including SQL, Power BI, and MS Office to ensure stable supply and high-quality manufacturing for critical flight and infrastructure components.

What you'll do

  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for assigned parts and systems to resolve manufacturing and quality challenges at supplier sites.
  • Lead containment activities and drive root cause investigations to mitigate risks to build and launch schedules.
  • Resolve critical path component issues at suppliers to ensure zero disruption to production timelines.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to create, manage, and disposition issue tickets for rework or repair.
  • Partner with procurement to identify, vet, and onboard high-quality suppliers capable of meeting aggressive production speeds.
  • Conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews to ensure parts are manufacturable during the early stages of development.
  • Manage the New Product Introduction (NPI) process for new parts or when transitioning components to new suppliers.
  • Execute the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) to stabilize supply and reduce inspection oversight.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or STEM discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience with manufacturing and/or inspection of mechanical products in a production environment.
  • Experience with machining, fabrication, and vendor design-engineered systems like pumps, valves, and actuators.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and models using GD&T.
  • Working knowledge of supplier quality processes including PPAP, APQP, and FAIR.
  • Knowledge of statistical techniques such as Lean, Six Sigma, or Design of Experiments.
  • Experience with quality systems (ISO 9000/TS/AS9100/NADCAP) and manufacturing operation systems (MRP/ERP).
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible for export control authorizations.
