TL;DR · Supplier Development Engineer, Cables

Supplier Development Engineer, Cables (Starlink) joins the Starlink User Terminal team to manage a resilient supply chain for Power over Ethernet and AC power cords. This role involves end-to-end supplier development, including strategic selection, new product introduction, and high-volume manufacturing scaling. The engineer will oversee process engineering, qualification plans, and reliability campaigns while ensuring material and process corners are fully characterized. Key responsibilities include performing root cause analysis using 8D and five-whys methodologies, conducting site acceptance tests, and driving improvements through Lean methodologies. Technical requirements include expertise in cable construction, termination processes, and standards like IEEE 802.3af/at/bt and UL 444. The role addresses the challenge of scaling manufacturing for critical connectivity components while ensuring performance under load, managing thermal testing, and resolving common failure modes such as insulation cracking or conductor fatigue.

What you'll do

  • Manage end-to-end supplier development for PoE cables, AC power cords, and connectivity components from selection through high-volume production.
  • Evaluate supplier manufacturing capabilities and technical readiness for processes like extrusion, shielding, termination, and connector molding.
  • Lead new product introduction activities including PPAP, first article inspections, and reliability campaigns to enable full-rate manufacturing.
  • Develop and standardize qualification protocols for cable commodities, including thermal testing, flex-life cycling, and EMI/EMC compliance.
  • Drive supplier performance improvements using Lean methodologies, process audits, and systematic problem-solving to improve quality and cost.
  • Perform root cause analysis and lead corrective actions for common cable failure modes like insulation cracking and connector fatigue.
  • Provide reactive quality engineering support by conducting rapid containment and 8D investigations for field returns and production issues.
  • Monitor field performance data to provide feedback to engineering teams for iterative product and process improvements.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or another engineering discipline.
  • At least 1 year of experience in cable, quality, reliability engineering, or supplier development.
  • Preferred: 3+ years of experience in cable, quality, reliability engineering, or supplier development.
  • Technical expertise in Power over Ethernet (PoE) standards, AC cord requirements, and high-volume manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with PPAP, APQP, DFMEA, PFMEA, and first article inspections for cable and power cord commodities.
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as IEEE 802.3af/at/bt, UL 444, UL 817, IEC 60228, and IPC/WHMA-A-620.
  • Proficiency in root cause analysis (8D, 5-Why), Lean manufacturing, and statistical tools like Minitab or Six Sigma.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible for export control authorizations under ITAR regulations.
