TL;DR · Supplier Development Engineer, Automation & Controls

Supplier Development Engineer, Automation & Controls (Starlink) joins the Starlink User Terminal team to drive the development, bring-up, and optimization of automated manufacturing equipment and control systems at contract manufacturers. This role involves end-to-end ownership of automation cells, custom fixturing, conveyor logic, and line optimization to achieve high throughput and quality. The engineer will engage in early supplier selection, design and qualify workholding solutions, and manage new product introduction activities. Key responsibilities include programming PLC logic, HMI development, and SCADA systems while integrating robotic systems, vision guidance, and servo motion control using protocols like EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, and Profinet. The role requires expertise in DOE, SPC, IQ/OQ/PQ, and PPAP processes to solve manufacturing challenges related to material variation and process capability for high-volume production of satellite hardware.

What you'll do

  • Manage end-to-end development and qualification of automation equipment and control systems at contract manufacturers.
  • Collaborate with suppliers on early equipment selection, fixturing design, and controls architecture for high-volume manufacturing.
  • Design and qualify custom automation fixtures, workholding solutions, and poka-yoke mechanisms to ensure process capability.
  • Develop and optimize conveyor systems including logic, routing algorithms, and material flow control to maximize throughput.
  • Program and debug PLC logic, HMI interfaces, and SCADA systems for automated cells and safety interlocks.
  • Integrate robotic systems, vision guidance, and servo motion control into automated assembly cells using industrial protocols.
  • Lead line optimization initiatives focused on takt time reduction, bottleneck analysis, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
  • Perform root cause analysis and corrective actions for equipment downtime, quality escapes, and field issues.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, controls engineering, or another engineering discipline.
  • At least 1 year of experience in automation equipment development, controls engineering, or manufacturing line deployment.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or Beckhoff), HMI development, and industrial networking protocols like EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, and Profinet.
  • Experience designing and bringing up automated assembly lines including custom fixtures, robotic cells, and conveyor systems.
  • Expertise in line optimization techniques such as takt time reduction, bottleneck analysis, and OEE improvement.
  • Proficiency in statistical tools including Design of Experiments (DOE), Statistical Process Control (SPC), and root cause analysis methodologies like 8D or 5-Why.
  • Experience leading equipment qualification processes including IQ, OQ, PQ, GR&R, and PPAP at contract manufacturers.
  • U.S. citizen.
