TL;DR · Senior Communication Systems Research Scientist, Radio Resource Management

Sr. Communication Systems Research Scientist – Radio Resource Management joins the Amazon Leo team to lead research and system design for radio resource management and radio access layers within a direct-to-device wireless network. The role focuses on developing 3GPP-compliant services for unmodified commercial handsets, addressing unique challenges like large time-varying delay, Doppler effects, and shared spectrum in Non-Terrestrial Networks. Key responsibilities include designing MAC scheduling, link adaptation, power control, and beam management while ensuring mobility and service continuity across moving satellite base stations. The candidate will build and refactor simulation code to model constellation dynamics and use agentic AI for optimization and debugging. Required skills include expertise in 3GPP systems, multi-user MIMO, and wireless simulators using Matlab, Python, or C++. This role solves complex connectivity problems by bridging the gap between physical layer requirements and high-level networking protocols.

What you'll do

  • Design and specify RRM algorithms including MAC scheduling, link adaptation, power control, and HARQ strategy for 3GPP-based D2D systems.
  • Optimize beam management as a joint resource process involving band assignment, packet scheduling, and MU-MIMO user pairing.
  • Develop RRM frameworks specifically for Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) conditions like high propagation delay and Doppler pre-compensation.
  • Design mobility and service continuity protocols for satellite networks where base stations move rather than the users.
  • Coordinate with PHY teams to define L1/L2 elements such as PRACH, initial access, and FEC modeling.
  • Maintain consistency between radio designs and higher networking layers including RRC, NAS, and 5GC integration over long-RTT links.
  • Build and refactor link-level and system-level simulators using agentic AI to optimize parameters and triage failures.
  • Represent the company in 3GPP standards organizations to develop and defend contributions on NTN and D2D work items.

What we're looking for

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or granted asylum/refugee status for export control compliance.
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent professional experience in the electrical engineering field.
  • 7+ years of professional experience in wireless communications at the system or implementation level.
  • Demonstrated experience in radio resource management for 3GPP systems including MAC scheduling, link adaptation, power control, HARQ, mobility, or QoS.
  • Experience developing and running link-level or system-level wireless simulators in Matlab, Python, or C++ using agentic AI.
  • PhD with emphasis in wireless communication systems, radio resource management, or network optimization (preferred).
  • Deep understanding of 3GPP RRM, multi-antenna/beam-domain resource allocation, and modem L1/L2 algorithms (preferred).
  • Experience in 3GPP technology standardization, direct-to-device systems, or advanced simulator design (preferred).
