The Sr. Communication Sys Engineer, Modeling and Simulation joins the Amazon Leo team to support low Earth orbit satellite constellation services for government customers. This role involves assessing how satellite capabilities perform against specific government use cases by evaluating system and network performance regarding capacity, coverage, latency, and availability. You will own system-level modeling and analysis, perform mission engineering to translate objectives into scenarios, and design resource scheduling for satellite beam assignment under power and spectrum constraints. You will build and extend simulation models using MATLAB, C++, and Python to account for orbital mechanics, RF and optical link budgets, and inter-satellite geometry. The work focuses on optimizing multi-disciplinary trades between RF bandwidth and network resource allocation to deliver required operational outcomes for secure satellite communications.
Own system-level modeling and analysis for government mission scenarios across coverage, capacity, latency, and availability.
Translate customer mission objectives into scenarios, measures of effectiveness, and design reference missions.
Apply orbital mechanics and constellation geometry to perform coverage, access, and contact analyses.
Design and evaluate resource scheduling and allocation approaches for satellite beam assignment and prioritization.
Build and utilize RF and optical link budgets to model time-varying system capacity and availability.
Extend existing simulation code and create new models using MATLAB, C++, or Python.
Account for self-interference and interference from other space and terrestrial systems in capacity analyses.
Prepare and present technical content, visualizations, and analysis packages for government customers and program reviews.
What we're looking for
U.S. citizenship is required.
Recent or active US Government TS/SCI security clearance (polygraph preferred).
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or an equivalent field.
8+ years of experience in satellite or network system design, modeling, and analysis.
8+ years of experience developing code in MATLAB, C, C++, or Python using industry-standard coding and regression practices.
Strong understanding of orbital mechanics and constellation geometry to simulate time-varying relative geometry of satellites and ground nodes.
Working knowledge of RF or optical link budgets and experience with resource scheduling, allocation, or optimization for communications or satellite systems.
Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing and presenting technical content for customers and program reviews.
