TL;DR · Senior Protection and Control Engineer

Senior Protection and Control Engineer joins the High Voltage Engineering team to provide technical leadership for high-voltage substation projects supporting solar, wind, and battery energy storage facilities. This role involves managing protection and control activities from design development through commissioning and post-energization support for substations ranging from 35 kV to 500 kV. Key responsibilities include reviewing relay settings, short-circuit studies, and coordination reports while ensuring NERC PRC compliance. The candidate will utilize SEL protection and automation products alongside tools like ETAP and PowerFactory. Required expertise includes power system fundamentals, time-current characteristics, and familiarity with communication protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP3, and Modbus. The role focuses on solving technical challenges in renewable energy infrastructure by standardizing practices, performing root-cause analysis for site events, and mentoring junior engineers to ensure reliable grid integration.

What you'll do

  • Lead protection and control engineering activities for high-voltage substations supporting solar, wind, and battery storage projects.
  • Provide technical leadership through all project phases including design development, construction support, commissioning, and post-energization.
  • Review protection drawings, relay settings, short-circuit studies, coordination studies, and other related technical reports.
  • Evaluate short-circuit study results for generation interconnections and provide actionable feedback to EPC partners.
  • Perform technical reviews of equipment testing for high- and medium-voltage circuit breakers, transformers, and grounding systems.
  • Coordinate NERC PRC compliance activities across multiple projects with utilities and internal stakeholders.
  • Standardize protection and control practices, philosophies, templates, and lessons learned across various project applications.
  • Mentor associate engineers and peer engineers to support technical knowledge sharing and leadership development.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in power systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in protection and control engineering for high-voltage substations or renewable generation facilities.
  • Experience with SEL protection and automation products.
  • Strong understanding of power system fundamentals, protection principles, relay coordination, and substation control schemes.
  • Experience reviewing or supporting high-voltage equipment testing procedures, test results, and commissioning documentation.
  • Familiarity with communication standards and protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, and related substation automation applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical single-line diagrams, DC schematics, protection and control drawings, and wiring diagrams.
  • Work authorization.
