The Senior Customer Reliability Engineer joins the Customer Reliability Engineering team to serve as a critical link between customers and product engineering. This role involves rapid response to high-severity incidents, where you will reproduce defects, isolate root causes across the infrastructure, and drive upstream fixes. You will also perform proactive engineering by building telemetry pipelines, automated detectors, and AI-native diagnostic tools to prevent future crises. Key technical requirements include proficiency in networking protocols like BGP, DNS, and TCP/IP, as well as experience with HTTP/S, TLS, and WAF concepts. You must be skilled in Python, Bash, SQL, and observability tools like Wireshark and Grafana. The role solves complex reliability problems for critical infrastructure, including financial services, government systems, and media platforms.
Own and resolve high-severity customer incidents by reproducing defects and isolating root causes across the full infrastructure stack.
Drive technical fixes and workarounds in partnership with Product Engineering to address underlying system gaps.
Build proactive engineering capabilities including telemetry pipelines, automated detectors, and diagnostic tooling to prevent future incidents.
Develop and deploy AI-native agents to pre-diagnose incidents and propose root causes with cited evidence.
Analyze support and telemetry signals to identify systemic risks and define customer-facing reliability metrics.
Manage the technical escalation lifecycle with clear ownership and timely communication to enterprise customers.
Provide technical leadership by creating runbooks, mentoring support teams, and sharing knowledge from incident postmortems.
Maintain deep expertise across Cloudflare’s product portfolio including DNS, WAF, DDoS mitigation, and Zero Trust.
What we're looking for
Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in site reliability engineering, escalation engineering, systems engineering, or a comparable technical support/operations role.
At least 2 years of experience in customer-facing environments.
Strong foundation in networking and security including TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/S, TLS/SSL, BGP, OSPF, and firewall concepts.
Proficiency with observability and diagnostic tools such as Wireshark, tcpdump, Kibana, Elasticsearch, Grafana, and distributed tracing.
Strong scripting and automation skills in Bash and Python with a track record of shipping reliability tooling.
Expert-level proficiency with Linux command-line tools including curl, dig, git, traceroute, mtr, strace, and ss.
Experience with incident management, postmortem culture, and SLO/SLI-based reliability practices.
Export control laws, including the U.S. Export Administration Regulations.
