TL;DR · Senior Associate Scientist, Upstream Process Development, Bioprocess Automation & Digitization

Senior Associate Scientist, Upstream Process Development — Bioprocess Automation & Digitization is a hybrid role within the Upstream Process Development group of the Bioprocess R&D organization. This position combines laboratory science with software development to create manufacturing processes for recombinant proteins and other modalities for clinical trials. The successful candidate will spend half their time performing mammalian cell culture processes in the lab and the other half building an OPC UA-based platform to automate bioreactors, analyzers, and PAT instruments. Key responsibilities include developing control schemes, designing UI elements, and managing instrument platforms like Raman probes and automated cell counters. Required skills include a degree in a relevant engineering or science field, hands-on laboratory experience, and proficiency in at least one programming language. The role addresses the technical challenge of integrating real-time control logic into live lab operations.

What you'll do

  • Run mammalian cell culture processes and perform experiments in scale-down models like shake flasks and bioreactors.
  • Develop, test, and deploy control schemes, alarms, and user interface elements on an internal automation platform.
  • Translate biological process requirements into technical specifications for automated control systems.
  • Serve as the technical owner and subject matter expert for specific instrument platforms including bioreactors and PAT tools.
  • Integrate various laboratory instruments and sensors into the company's OPC UA-based data infrastructure.
  • Manage the full software lifecycle, including version control, code review, testing, and deployment of automation scripts.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting as a digital subject matter expert for fellow scientists using the platform.

What we're looking for

  • Must have a Bachelor's degree with 2–4 years of industrial experience or a Master's degree with 0–2 years of industrial experience in a relevant engineering or science field.
  • Must possess working knowledge of at least one programming language and a portfolio of substantial projects or published source code.
  • Must have hands-on laboratory experience, such as cell culture or protein purification in an academic or industrial setting.
  • Must be able to translate process understanding into control requirements and develop software for automation and data infrastructure.
  • Must be able to design, execute, and troubleshoot experiments using scale-down models like shake flasks or high-throughput bioreactors.
  • Must serve as a technical owner for instrument platforms including bioreactor control systems, automated cell counters, and PAT instruments.
  • Must possess strong communication skills to explain technical decisions to non-technical colleagues and collaborate in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have permanent work authorization to be employed in the United States.
