TL;DR · Senior Scientist I, Cell Culture Process Development

Senior Scientist I - Cell Culture Process Development joins the Cell Culture Development group within PDS&T Biologics to support process development and technology transfer for cell culture processes. This role focuses on the clinical manufacturing and commercialization of therapeutic proteins by developing and characterizing highly-productive CHO cell culture processes suitable for cGMP biotherapeutic manufacturing. The candidate will lead research initiatives to reduce cost of goods through improved platform processes, utilizing cell metabolic modeling, perfusion technology, and Process Analytical Technology tools. Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and analyzing experiments using Design of Experiments principles, performing technical transfers, and collaborating cross-functionally with analytical development and manufacturing teams. Required expertise includes mammalian suspension cell culture, bench scale bioreactors, AMBR, and shake flasks. The role addresses the challenge of optimizing production workflows for complex biologics within a regulated manufacturing environment.

What you'll do

  • Develop and characterize high-productivity CHO cell culture processes for cGMP biotherapeutic manufacturing.
  • Execute technical transfer and provide ongoing manufacturing support for therapeutic proteins.
  • Lead R&D initiatives to reduce cost of goods through improved platform processes and workflows.
  • Implement advanced technologies including cell metabolic modeling, perfusion systems, and Process Analytical Technology (PAT) tools.
  • Design and analyze cell culture experiments using Design of Experiments (DOE) principles.
  • Author technical reports, protocols, and other key documentation for internal and external audiences.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and provide subject matter expertise for the production of commercial biologics.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree with 10 years of experience, Master’s degree with 8 years of experience, or a PhD in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven ability to independently design experiments, troubleshoot technical issues, and deliver high-quality scientific output.
  • Strong understanding of cell biology with extensive hands-on experience with mammalian suspension cell culture.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge to carry out the job functions.
  • Understanding of cell culture processes including development, scale up/down, recombinant protein production, and protein characterization (preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience in cell metabolic modeling and process modeling using mechanistic models or machine learning algorithms (preferred).
  • Familiarity with bioreactor perfusion processes (preferred).
  • Experience applying Process Analytical Technology (PAT) to improve cell culture processes (preferred).
