Senior Scientist II, Downstream Development (Scale-Up Laboratory Lead) joins the Downstream Development team to lead laboratory-based scale-up activities for biologic drug substance manufacturing. This role involves developing, optimizing, and transferring robust, phase-appropriate purification processes while providing technical leadership in technology transfer to internal sites and external partners. The candidate will manage lab operations, oversee non-GMP material generation, and serve as a subject matter expert for AKTA systems and UNICORN software. Key responsibilities include executing resin- and membrane-based chromatography, filtration, viral clearance, and high-concentration UF/DF. Technical requirements include expertise in large column packing, buffer preparation, and troubleshooting equipment with vendors. The role focuses on the technical challenge of advancing next-generation purification platform capabilities for monoclonal antibodies, bi-specifics, and novel modalities to ensure manufacturing readiness and process robustness across various development stages.
Lead downstream scale-up lab activities and non-GMP material generation for biologic candidates across various development stages.
Serve as the technical lead and subject matter expert for AKTA systems, method development, and UNICORN software execution.
Manage technology transfer activities to internal manufacturing sites and external partners, including preparation of transfer packages and batch support.
Execute downstream unit operations including chromatography, filtration, viral clearance, high-concentration UF/DF, and formulation.
Perform hands-on large column packing, buffer preparation, and equipment setup for scale-up processes.
Design and execute scale-down and scale-up studies to improve process understanding and manufacturing readiness.
Develop and implement lab operational workflows, procedures, and documentation to ensure compliant execution of activities.
Troubleshoot complex process and equipment issues while collaborating with vendors to resolve technical problems.
What we're looking for
Degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline with 12+ years of experience for BS, 10+ for MS, or 4+ for PhD.
Significant experience in downstream and purification process development within a biologics CMC environment.
Demonstrated expertise in process scale-up, scale-down model execution, and technology transfer.
Must be an AKTA systems expert with deep hands-on experience using UNICORN software.
Hands-on experience operating large-scale TFF processes, packing 3–20 L columns, and executing large-volume formulations.
Experience with large column packing, buffer preparation, equipment troubleshooting, and day-to-day laboratory execution.
Working knowledge of analytical methods such as HPLC, CE, UV-based quantitation, and impurity characterization.
Experience leading or overseeing a downstream scale-up laboratory or comparable technical development function (preferred).
