TL;DR · Senior Associate Scientist, Process Development

As a Senior Associate Scientist - Process Development within the Early Bioprocess Development group in the Vaccines organization, you will accelerate the development of high-quality protein subunit vaccines. You will optimize cell line development workflows to improve expression, productivity, and biological robustness while executing fermentation to characterize key performance indicators like cell fitness and protein yield. Your daily work involves performing data analysis to establish correlations between input parameters and output values, maintaining records in Electronic Laboratory Notebooks, and authoring technical reports or scientific publications. You will utilize core competencies in molecular biology, including PCR, ddPCR, ELISA, and SDS-PAGE, alongside aseptic cell culture techniques and flow cytometry. The role focuses on the technical challenge of translating advanced science into robust manufacturing processes for vaccine production through collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams across cell culture, purification, and mRNA production.

What you'll do

  • Optimize cell line development workflows to improve protein expression, productivity, and process efficiency.
  • Execute fermentation processes to characterize key performance indicators like cell fitness, growth, and protein yield.
  • Analyze data to identify patterns and establish correlations between input parameters and output values.
  • Present experimental data and strategic conclusions at cross-functional meetings for team knowledge sharing.
  • Maintain accurate records in Electronic Laboratory Notebooks and author technical production reports.
  • Draft and contribute to internal technical reports and external scientific publications.
  • Perform molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cloning, and protein analysis.
  • Conduct aseptic cell culture techniques including cell passaging, maintenance, and monitoring of morphology.

What we're looking for

  • A B.S. degree with 3 to 5 years of relevant industry or research experience is required.
  • An M.S. in bioengineering, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or related fields with 0 to 3 years of experience is required.
  • Experience in aseptic cell culture techniques including cell passaging, maintenance, transfection, and monitoring morphology and viability is required.
  • Experience using flow cytometry, cell sorting cytometers, and analysis software such as FlowJo is required.
  • Hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques like PCR, ddPCR, RT-PCR, cloning, and protein assays is required.
  • Candidates must be authorized to be employed in the U.S. by any employer.
  • Experience in setting up, feeding, sampling, and controlling benchtop or single-use bioreactors (batch, fed-batch) is preferred.
  • Work authorization in the United States.
