The Linux/HPC System Administrator joins the APS Engineering Support Division to manage and support onsite HPC resources, beamline systems, and beamline services. This role involves designing, installing, and managing services on Linux systems while ensuring the reliability and scalability of infrastructure supporting advanced computational workloads. Key responsibilities include administering four unique HPC clusters, Globus data transfer nodes, GPU nodes for machine learning and AI applications, and IBM Storage Scale appliances. The administrator will also manage Nvidia InfiniBand switches, monitor system health using Grafana, and optimize PBS Pro scheduler installations for efficient job queuing. Technical requirements include proficiency in Linux/Unix administration, experience with GPFS or IBM Storage Scale, and knowledge of Python or Bash scripting. This position provides critical technical support for X-ray Science Division beamline computers and associated networking to resolve complex data acquisition issues.
Configure and maintain GPU nodes to optimize utilization for machine learning and AI workloads.

Provide advanced technical support for beamline computers, storage systems, and associated networking on Linux.
Manage and optimize PBS Pro scheduler installations to improve job queuing and resource allocation.

Perform hardware and software installations while troubleshooting network issues for beamline experiments.
Create detailed documentation of system configurations and generate regular reports on performance and incidents.

What we're looking for
Proof of U.S. citizenship is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (Master's preferred).
4+ years experience with a Bachelor's or 2+ years experience with a Master's in a relevant field.
At least 2 years of experience in HPC systems administration or a similar role.
Proficiency in Linux/Unix system administration and experience with Globus, GPU nodes, and HPC cluster management.
Experience with IBM Storage Scale or GPFS and familiarity with PBS Pro scheduler and job queuing systems.
Hands-on experience with monitoring tools like Grafana.
Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) for automation (preferred); certifications in HPC, Linux, or storage technologies (preferred).
