TL;DR · HPC Systems Administration Specialist

As an HPC Systems Administration Specialist within the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility team, you will contribute to the design, development, and advancement of the high performance computing environment. You will focus on software integration with the facility's operational ecosystem, specifically building new systems, tools, and software stacks. Your daily work involves managing Linux clusters, performing performance tuning, and handling resource allocation. To succeed, you must utilize Spack for package management, manage programming environments via Lmod or Singularity/Apptainer, and handle libraries like MPI, CUDA, BLAS, and FFTW. You will use Python for automation, manage configurations through version control, and navigate build systems like Make and CMake. The role addresses the technical challenge of managing complex software dependencies and providing essential support to researchers within a scientific computing environment.

What you'll do

  • Design, develop, and advance the high performance computing (HPC) environment and software stacks.
  • Manage Linux systems including cluster management, performance tuning, and resource allocation.
  • Deploy software using Spack to manage dependencies and maintain multiple versions in production.
  • Create and manage programming environments using Lmod or containers like Singularity and Apptainer.
  • Automate package definitions and workflows using Python scripts and CI pipelines.
  • Manage build systems including Make, CMake, and Autotools for various compilers.
  • Debug complex dependency conflicts and resolve software integration issues within the ecosystem.
  • Support researchers by refining user requirements and providing technical assistance in scientific computing settings.

What we're looking for

  • Applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship to comply with federal regulations and contracts.
  • Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree for PT2 level or a Master's degree for PT3 level.
  • PT2 candidates require 2+ years of experience, while PT3 candidates require 4+ years of experience (or 2+ with a Master's).
  • Experience in Linux systems administration including cluster management, performance tuning, and resource allocation in HPC settings is required.
  • Experience using Spack for software deployment, building from source, and managing dependencies in production environments is required.
  • Proficiency in creating programming environments using environment modules (Lmod) or containers (Singularity/Apptainer) is required.
  • Skills in Python scripting, CI pipelines, and build systems like Make, CMake, and Autotools are required.
  • Experience with version control systems and debugging dependency conflicts in complex software stacks is required.
