As an HPC Systems Administration Specialist on the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility team, you will contribute to the design and development of new high performance computing systems, tools, and software stacks. You will manage, configure, and optimize Spack environments while building, compiling, and validating complex scientific software for heterogeneous exascale architectures including CPUs, GPUs, and accelerators. Your daily work involves using CMake, GNU Make, and various compilers like GNU, LLVM/Clang, and Intel to integrate software into the facility's ecosystem. You will also perform performance tuning, debug code with domain experts, and manage upstream engagement by reporting issues to open-source communities. The role requires expertise in Linux-based environments and MPI libraries to support researchers using a diverse portfolio of scientific applications within a large-scale research infrastructure focused on advanced computational science.
Maintain, configure, and optimize Spack environments across ALCF systems to support diverse scientific applications.
Build, compile, and validate complex scientific software using CMake and GNU Make for heterogeneous exascale architectures.
Profile, debug, and performance-tune code with domain experts to maximize hardware efficiency.
Identify software defects and report issues back to external developers and open-source communities.
Document installation procedures, custom build flags, and optimization strategies for the research community.
Provide expert-level support to researchers using the facility's software stack.
Integrate software with the larger operational ecosystem at the Argonne facility site.
What we're looking for
Applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship to comply with federal regulations and contract requirements.
Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree and 2+ years of experience for PT2 level, or a Master's degree and 2+ years of experience for PT3 level.
Demonstrated experience is required with Spack, CMake, Make, and managing software dependencies in Linux-based high-performance computing environments.
Candidates must have strong proficiency in compiling large-scale scientific applications from source using various compilers and MPI libraries.
Experience is required in profiling and tuning tools to optimize applications beyond default installations.
Applicants must possess excellent interpersonal skills to work with domain scientists, researchers, and external developers.
