TL;DR · Hardware Manufacturing Engineer

The Hardware Manufacturing Engineer joins the HIFE team to manage manufacturing workstreams for cloud hardware platforms, including GPU systems. This role focuses on ensuring that Microsoft-designed hardware can be built at supplier factories safely, efficiently, and at scale. Key responsibilities include driving NPI build execution, assessing supplier readiness, leading manufacturing issue triage, improving yield, and managing risks from engineering validation through production ramp. The candidate will perform DFM/DFA reviews, conduct process audits, and utilize structured problem-solving methods like 8D and Fishbone to resolve defects. Core competencies include statistical process control, yield analytics, and experience with PPAP activities. Technical skills involve using tools such as Valor, Creo, Cadence Allegro, and Power BI. The role addresses the challenge of industrializing complex custom silicon systems and high-performance infrastructure for large-scale cloud environments.

What you'll do

  • Conduct DFM, DFA, and testability reviews to identify manufacturing constraints and improve product readiness.
  • Drive NPI build execution by coordinating engineering validation, production ramps, and capacity assessments across multiple sites.
  • Manage supplier relationships to assess manufacturing capability, ensure quality compliance, and mitigate supply chain risks.
  • Execute supplier process qualifications including audits, PPAP activities, and tooling acceptance to ensure repeatable production.
  • Apply statistical process control and yield analytics to detect defects early and improve manufacturing visibility.
  • Lead root cause analysis for manufacturing issues using structured methods like 8D and Fishbone to implement corrective actions.
  • Analyze yield, cycle-time, and equipment data to identify trends and implement operational improvements.
  • Maintain risk registers and dashboards to communicate build status and recommendations to program leadership.

What we're looking for

  • A Master's degree in an engineering field and 1+ year of manufacturing experience, or a Bachelor's degree and 2+ years of experience is required.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements is required.
  • Experience in hardware NPI builds, production ramp, or supplier qualification activities (preferred).
  • Experience using structured problem-solving methods and leading L1/L2 triage for manufacturing issues (preferred).
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and external partners to resolve technical issues (preferred).
  • Experience in SoC system integration or advanced ASIC-based hardware programs (preferred).
  • Experience with server compute, storage, GPU, AI accelerators, or high-speed interconnect products (preferred).
  • Familiarity with Valor, Creo, Cadence Allegro, Power BI, or similar manufacturing and data tools (preferred).
