TL;DR · Data Center Project Manager, Mechanical

Data Center Project Manager, Mechanical joins the Places team within the Global Data Center Design and Construction organization to manage the full lifecycle of mechanical systems for mission-critical data center construction projects. This role involves overseeing design, procurement, commissioning, and closeout for critical infrastructure including chillers, cooling towers, CRAHs, CRACs, and hydronic systems. The candidate will manage vendor relationships, track project schedules, oversee Test and Balance activities, and ensure compliance with ASHRAE, NFPA 90A, and IMC codes. Key responsibilities include reviewing BMS controls submittals, managing RFI tracking, and coordinating integrated system testing from Level 1 through Level 5. The role requires expertise in mechanical engineering, construction management, and large-scale data center infrastructure to solve complex technical challenges related to cooling systems and building management systems in a high-stakes environment.

What you'll do

  • Manage the full mechanical equipment lifecycle from bid leveling and procurement through just-in-time delivery.
  • Oversee construction activities as an owner's representative, managing contractors, subcontractors, and specialized vendors.
  • Review and approve technical submittals for mechanical equipment, BMS controls, and hydronic systems.
  • Monitor project schedules, budgets, risk factors, and RFI resolutions to ensure timely completion.
  • Coordinate Test and Balance (TAB) activities to ensure alignment with mechanical design and commissioning plans.
  • Execute Commissioning (Cx) plans and oversee functional testing for all mechanical and BMS controls systems.
  • Manage the procurement of equipment while tracking vendor milestones and manufacturing lead times.
  • Ensure all project documentation, including as-builts and O&M manuals, is complete for final handover.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience focused on hyperscale or large-scale colocation data center construction and commissioning.
  • Experience managing the mechanical equipment procurement lifecycle including bid leveling, PO issuance, shop drawing review, and vendor milestone management.
  • Hands-on experience developing and executing Commissioning (Cx) Plans, schedules, and checklists for mechanical and BMS controls systems.
  • Experience overseeing and coordinating TAB activities and reporting in accordance with ASHRAE 111, AABC, or NEBB standards.
  • Working knowledge of BMS controls systems including sequence of operations, functional testing, VFD configurations, and PID tuning.
  • Working knowledge of data center cooling infrastructure including chilled water systems, cooling towers, CRAHs, CRACs, AHUs, pumps, and hydronic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents such as mechanical plans, P&IDs, BMS control schematics, and equipment schedules.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE standards, NFPA 90A, IMC, and applicable mechanical codes and safety standards.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 40-50% of the time.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent (preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience (preferred).
  • Experience managing Cx Level 1 through Level 5 Integrated Systems Testing coordination (preferred).
  • Familiarity with BMS platforms like Johnson Controls Metasys or familiarity with energy modeling tools (preferred).
