TL;DR · Data Center Project Manager, Mechanical

Data Center Project Manager, Mechanical joins the Places team within the Global Data Center Design and Construction organization to manage the full lifecycle of mechanical systems for mission-critical data center construction projects. This role involves overseeing design, procurement, commissioning, and closeout for critical infrastructure including chillers, cooling towers, CRAHs, CRACs, and hydronic systems. The candidate will manage vendor relationships, track bid leveling, oversee Test and Balance activities according to ASHRAE standards, and coordinate BMS controls integration. Key responsibilities include reviewing shop drawings, managing RFI tracking, ensuring compliance with NFPA 90A and IMC codes, and executing Level 1 through Level 5 commissioning. The role requires expertise in mechanical engineering, construction management, and large-scale data center infrastructure to ensure facilities are delivered safely, on time, and within budget while solving complex cooling and power distribution challenges.

What you'll do

  • Manage the full lifecycle of mechanical equipment from bid leveling and procurement through just-in-time delivery.
  • Oversee construction activities as an owner's representative, managing subcontractors and ensuring adherence to schedules and budgets.
  • Review and approve technical submittals for major mechanical systems, including chillers, cooling towers, and hydronic piping.
  • Manage BMS controls integration by reviewing sequence of operations, control schematics, and point lists during the design phase.
  • Oversee Test and Balance (TAB) activities to ensure air and hydronic systems align with mechanical design intent.
  • Execute Commissioning (Cx) plans for mechanical and BMS systems through Level 5 Integrated Systems Testing.
  • Manage project documentation including RFI tracking, change orders, and final as-built drawings for facility handover.
  • Ensure all site operations comply with safety regulations, ASHRAE standards, and local mechanical codes.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience focused on hyperscale or large-scale colocation data center construction and commissioning.
  • Experience managing the mechanical equipment procurement lifecycle including bid leveling, PO issuance, shop drawing review, and vendor milestone management.
  • Hands-on experience developing and executing Commissioning (Cx) Plans, schedules, and checklists for mechanical and BMS controls systems.
  • Experience overseeing and coordinating TAB activities and reporting in accordance with ASHRAE 111, AABC, or NEBB standards.
  • Working knowledge of BMS controls systems including sequence of operations, functional testing, VFD configurations, and PID tuning.
  • Working knowledge of data center cooling infrastructure including chilled water systems, cooling towers, CRAHs, CRACs, AHUs, pumps, and hydronic systems.
  • Ability to read construction documents such as mechanical plans, P&IDs, BMS control schematics, and equipment schedules.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE standards, NFPA 90A, IMC, and applicable mechanical codes and safety standards.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 40-50% of the time.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent (preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience (preferred).
  • Experience managing Cx Level 1 through Level 5 Integrated Systems Testing (IST) coordination and documentation (preferred).
  • Familiarity with BMS platforms like Johnson Controls Metasys or familiarity with energy modeling tools (preferred).
