TL;DR · Controls Engineer, Optical Inter-Satellite Link

Controls Engineer, Amazon Leo Optical Inter-Satellite Link works within the OISL Electrical Engineering team to develop, test, and validate pointing, acquisition, and tracking systems for free-space optical links across a satellite constellation. The role involves bridging the gap between algorithm models and hardware implementations by performing flight data analysis, simulation correlation, and production root cause analysis. Key responsibilities include FPGA verification, developing test vectors against Simulink reference models, and supporting board-level design and testing of analog and mixed-signal circuits. Candidates must possess proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink, Python, and Git, alongside experience with lab instrumentation like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers. The position requires expertise in control system fundamentals, fixed-point concepts, and signal chain architecture to solve complex technical challenges related to satellite communication infrastructure and orbital hardware integration.

What you'll do

  • Analyze flight telemetry data to identify discrepancies and characterize on-orbit behavior.
  • Maintain simulation environments to validate model fidelity against observed flight data.
  • Develop test vectors to verify PAT FPGA implementations against Simulink reference models.
  • Perform MIL, SIL, and HIL verification for PAT control loops and state machines.
  • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for production failures and board-level electrical issues.
  • Execute trade studies for data converter selection and signal chain architecture.
  • Perform hardware characterization and troubleshooting for analog and mixed-signal circuits.
  • Document test procedures, results, and configuration management records for the engineering team.

What we're looking for

  • Must possess a BS degree in electrical engineering or an equivalent field.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or granted asylum/refugee status for export control compliance.
  • Must have professional experience in hardware-adjacent controls, test, or systems engineering roles.
  • Must be proficient in MATLAB and Simulink for running models, interpreting results, and debugging.
  • Must have experience with control system fundamentals including feedback loops, transfer functions, and stability concepts.
  • Must have experience analyzing test or flight data to identify trends, anomalies, and correlations.
  • Must be able to read schematics and understand digital/analog signal interfaces.
  • Must have experience using lab instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and signal generators.
