The Embedded Software Development Engineer, Amazon Leo Optical Inter-Satellite Link joins a multi-disciplinary team to develop flight software for a low Earth orbit satellite network. You will design, implement, and enhance switch-management software to enable deterministic, low-latency packet forwarding across a redundant switch topology. Key responsibilities include optimizing networking layers for optical inter-satellite link systems, developing network device drivers, and implementing protocols on embedded Linux. You will also build operational tooling for network diagnostics, including packet capture, structured logging, and metrics emission. The role requires proficiency in Linux and networking protocols, with preferred experience in ARM-based SoCs and space systems. You will solve complex problems regarding high-speed laser communications between satellites moving at orbital velocities to provide reliable broadband connectivity.
Design and implement switch-management software to translate SDN controller routes into forwarding-table entries.
Build MAC-learning and loop-prevention logic for redundant switch topologies to ensure low-latency packet forwarding.
Design and optimize networking layers for optical inter-satellite link systems on embedded Linux.
Develop and maintain network device drivers and protocol implementations for flight software.
Build operational tooling for network diagnostics, including packet capture, structured logging, and metrics emission.
Perform routing-table inspection and performance trending to facilitate rapid fault isolation across the satellite mesh.
Integrate and test high-speed optical communication systems with the underlying networking stack.
What we're looking for
3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
2+ years of non-internship design or architecture experience for new and existing systems.
Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
Experience in Linux and Networking protocols.
Experience developing embedded software for space systems, including optical communication systems, laser terminals, or high-speed serial interfaces (preferred).
Experience with ARM-based SoCs (preferred).
Must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or lawfully admitted as a refugee or granted asylum.
