TL;DR · Research Engineer Co-op

The Winter 2027 Research Engineer Co-op joins the Maritime Digital Production team to advance shipbuilding factory technology. You will work on a computational geometry engine that determines physical assembly and disassembly sequences for complex 3D CAD models. Your primary responsibility involves profiling a C++ pipeline to identify memory and time bottlenecks, then implementing algorithmic improvements such as pruning, memoization, and subassembly decomposition. You will also parallelize geometric tests while maintaining determinism and build a benchmark corpus for continuous integration. Required skills include modern C++, graph algorithms, and computational geometry fundamentals like bounding volume hierarchies. You will use tools like Eigen, CGAL, and Python to solve production scheduling problems, ensuring that large-scale assemblies with thousands of parts can be processed efficiently for manufacturing.

What you'll do

  • Profile a C++ computational geometry pipeline to identify time and memory bottlenecks on real assemblies.
  • Design and implement algorithmic improvements for disassembly sequence searches, including pruning and memoization.
  • Decompose large assemblies into smaller subassemblies that can be solved independently.
  • Parallelize expensive geometric tests across multiple cores while maintaining strict determinism.
  • Build a benchmark corpus and harness to run in continuous integration and catch regressions.
  • Gate every optimization by verifying output equivalence against a reference set.
  • Write technical reports and present results to the engineering team.

What we're looking for

  • Must be pursuing a master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Must be returning to school at the end of the internship to continue academic studies for at least one quarter or semester.
  • Must be a U.S. Person due to required access to U.S. export-controlled information or facilities.
  • Must be able to complete an in-person co-op in Santa Ana, CA, in winter 2027.
  • Strong modern C++ skills, specifically C++17 or later, for performance-sensitive code (preferred).
  • Solid knowledge of algorithms and data structures, including graph algorithms, combinatorial search, and complexity analysis (preferred).
  • Computational geometry fundamentals, including triangle meshes, bounding volume hierarchies, and collision tests (preferred).
  • Experience profiling and optimizing code to achieve measurable performance gains (preferred).
