The Staff & Senior Staff Data Platform Engineer - Slack will join the Slack data platform team to build out Agentic Analytics. This role involves designing APIs, MCPs, and tools that enable agents to map data concepts to entities in the data warehouse. You will build data platform infrastructure for agents, improve the semantic layer for metric definitions and lineage, and develop ingestion systems for timely analytics and experimentation. You will use Python, Go, SQL, Scala, and Typescript alongside technologies including Trino, Spark, Pinot, Hive, Airflow, Iceberg, Datahub, Kafka, S3, and Terraform. The work focuses on making data digestible for humans and AI agents, balancing freshness, accuracy, and cost while providing quantitative feedback for product iteration and root cause analysis.

What you'll do

  • Build a data platform specifically designed to support AI agents and developer tools.
  • Design APIs, MCPs, and tools that allow agents to map data concepts to warehouse entities.
  • Improve the semantic layer to help humans and agents navigate metric definitions and lineage.
  • Build ingestion and infrastructure for timely analytics and experimentation.
  • Evaluate and balance tradeoffs between data freshness, accuracy, reliability, and cost.
  • Ship tools that simplify query drafting, root cause analysis, and data visualization.
  • Drive the architecture, implementation, rollout, and adoption of production systems.
  • Mentor engineers and lead by example to improve design decisions and resolve technical dependencies.

What we're looking for

  • 8+ years of experience building and operating a data platform.
  • Proven track record of leading complex technical projects across teams as an individual contributor.
  • Strong software engineering skills balanced with deep data expertise.
  • Clear technical communication skills to build alignment with engineers, data scientists, analysts, and product partners.
  • Strong proficiency in programming languages like Python, Go, Java, or similar.
  • Experience building infrastructure or tools for AI agents (preferred).
  • Experience with semantic layers, metrics platforms, data catalogs, or lineage (preferred).
  • Expertise in SQL & Python to build data pipelines (preferred).
