TL;DR · Senior Battery Systems Engineer

Sr. Battery Systems Engineer, Amazon Leo joins the battery team to develop and mature battery systems for a low Earth orbit satellite constellation. This role involves owning the development of battery requirements, verification criteria, and acceptance limits from early design through production. The engineer will decompose system-level requirements into pack, module, BMS, cell, and test-level specifications while establishing technical rationale using battery models, simulation, tolerance analysis, Monte Carlo methods, and measurement uncertainty. Key responsibilities include applying Statistical Process Control, performing process capability analysis, and analyzing characterization, qualification, and production test data to ensure reliability in space applications. The role requires expertise in electrical or mechanical engineering to manage requirements across thermal, safety, and environmental domains while collaborating with cross-functional teams to maintain technical documentation and ensure requirement-to-verification traceability throughout the product lifecycle.

What you'll do

  • Develop and document battery system requirements across electrical, thermal, performance, safety, reliability, and environmental domains.
  • Decompose high-level satellite and system requirements into specific pack, module, BMS, cell, and test-level requirements.
  • Translate technical requirements into measurable verification criteria, pass/fail limits, and production acceptance limits.
  • Establish technical rationale for requirements using battery models, simulation, tolerance analysis, and empirical test results.
  • Define engineering margins by accounting for mission conditions, degradation, manufacturing variation, and measurement uncertainty.
  • Maintain requirement-to-verification traceability to ensure all critical components have appropriate verification methods.
  • Analyze characterization, qualification, and production data to validate assumptions and improve system models.
  • Apply Statistical Process Control (SPC) and trend monitoring to identify manufacturing risks and variations.

What we're looking for

  • Candidates must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or granted asylum/refugee status for export control compliance.
  • Bachelor's degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering, management, or technology field.
  • Experience developing requirements and verification criteria for complex battery, aerospace, automotive, or other high-reliability systems (preferred).
  • Master’s or advanced degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Systems Engineering (preferred).
  • Strong understanding of Li-ion battery behavior including capacity, DCIR, OCV, SOC/SOH, degradation, and thermal behavior (preferred).
  • Experience using modeling and statistical methods to establish engineering specifications and production acceptance limits (preferred).
  • Experience analyzing large production datasets and applying SPC and process capability methods (preferred).
  • Ability to communicate complex engineering analyses and defend technical decisions in cross-functional reviews (preferred).
