TL;DR · Senior Battery Systems Engineer

Senior Battery Systems Engineer As a Senior Battery Systems Engineer, you will join the Core Battery Group to drive the development of energy storage systems for next-generation drone products. You will serve as the primary technical owner for battery packs, managing the entire lifecycle from initial cell selection and prototype iterations through full-rate production. Your daily responsibilities include translating user stories into actionable requirements, collaborating with mechanical engineers on design revisions, performing root cause analysis on fielded systems, and supporting manufacturing scale-up using tools like DFMEAs. The role requires expertise in battery management system electrical design, algorithms, and validation, as well as cell characterization or modeling in Matlab and Simulink. You will utilize CAD tools such as CATIA, NX, or SolidWorks while ensuring compliance with safety standards like UN38.3 and NAVSEA S9310 to power unmanned aircraft in demanding environments.

What you'll do

  • Drive end-to-end energy storage system development from initial concept through full-rate production on accelerated timelines.
  • Act as the primary technical interface between the Core Battery Group and internal product teams.
  • Translate user stories and operational concepts into actionable technical requirements for battery systems.
  • Lead the selection, de-risking, and validation of battery cells for various drone products.
  • Manage design iterations with mechanical engineers to move from prototype packs to production units.
  • Support manufacturing engineering to scale production while ensuring reliability through tools like DFMEAs.
  • Perform hands-on battery bring-up, testing, debugging, and vehicle integration activities.
  • Conduct root cause analysis on fielded systems to develop countermeasures and design updates.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Physical Sciences with an applied focus on energy storage technologies.
  • 5+ years of experience designing, testing, and troubleshooting energy storage systems.
  • Proven experience in battery pack design, prototype assembly, and taking systems from prototype to production.
  • Professional awareness of BMS electrical design, algorithms/software functionality, or validation against operational requirements.
  • Professional awareness of battery cell characterization methods or modeling/simulation in Matlab or Simulink.
  • Basic proficiency with CAD tools such as CATIA, NX, or SolidWorks.
  • Understanding of UN38.3, NAVSEA S9310, and/or equivalent battery safety standards like UL or IEC.
  • Must be a U.S. Person due to export-controlled information requirements.
  • Graduate degree in engineering or physical sciences (preferred).
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-882, 810, 704, 461, and 464 (preferred).
  • Advanced experience designing battery pack components with CAD tools (preferred).
  • Experience with rapid deployment of drones/UAVs (preferred).
  • Experience with student lead competitions like Formula SAE or Hyperloop (preferred).
  • Advanced expertise in BMS design, software functionality, or validation (preferred).
  • Advanced expertise in cell characterization methods or Matlab/Simulink modeling (preferred).
