TL;DR · Signal Processing Engineer, Space

Signal Processing Engineer, Space The Signal Processing Engineer joins the Space team to develop critical discrimination algorithms for space and missile defense missions. This role involves designing signal processing pipelines that include detection, feature extraction, image processing, and measurement generation from EO/IR sensor data. The engineer will build advanced decision logic to distinguish threats from decoys, debris, and clutter in real-time environments while optimizing algorithms against noise characteristics and environmental effects. Key responsibilities include creating physics-based models, performing Monte Carlo analysis, and conducting hardware-in-the-loop testing to validate performance. Required expertise includes EO/IR sensor phenomenology, detection theory, and proficiency in algorithm development and coding for production deployment. The role addresses the technical challenge of extracting signals from noise within contested and degraded sensing environments to enhance space domain awareness and command and control capabilities.

What you'll do

  • Develop discrimination algorithms for EO/IR sensors to distinguish threats from decoys and debris in real-time.
  • Design and implement signal processing pipelines including detection, feature extraction, and image processing.
  • Create advanced decision logic to improve classification performance in evolving threat environments.
  • Optimize algorithms based on sensor phenomenology such as noise characteristics, SNR, and environmental effects.
  • Build physics-based models and conduct Monte Carlo simulations or hardware-in-the-loop testing to validate performance.
  • Develop analysis tools to evaluate algorithm performance under conditions like countermeasures and degraded sensing.
  • Transition discrimination algorithms from initial prototypes into production code for operational deployment.
  • Present discrimination solutions and demonstrate system performance to customers and stakeholders.

What we're looking for

  • Must possess and be able to maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience designing, implementing, and testing signal processing algorithms for EO/IR sensors or similar modalities in aerospace or defense systems.
  • Strong understanding of EO/IR sensor phenomenology including noise characteristics, detection theory, SNR analysis, resolution limits, and environmental effects.
  • Experience with signal processing techniques including detection algorithms, filtering, and measurement generation from sensor data.
  • Proficiency in algorithm development and coding with experience transitioning algorithms to production environments.
  • Experience with modeling, simulation, and testing workflows including physics-based modeling, Monte Carlo analysis, or hardware-in-the-loop environments.
  • Ability to collaborate with software engineers, systems engineers, and test teams to integrate algorithms into operational systems.
