Senior Building Automation Engineer (Michigan) serves as a senior technical expert for building automation and operational technology systems supporting mission-critical data center facilities. In this individual contributor role, you will lead complex troubleshooting, govern the technical quality of automation solutions, and manage the reliability, cybersecurity, and lifecycle performance of BMS, EPMS, PLC, SCADA, and OT infrastructure across multiple sites. You will be responsible for reviewing control logic, alarm philosophy, and integration quality while mentoring junior engineers and guiding critical decisions regarding automation architecture. The role requires expertise in industrial networking, HMI systems, and specific platforms such as Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Ignition, Niagara, or Johnson Controls. You will solve technical challenges related to electrical and mechanical infrastructure, ensuring high-availability operations through robust controls engineering and proactive risk management for site supportability.
Serve as a senior technical expert for BMS, EPMS, PLC, SCADA, and OT network systems supporting mission-critical infrastructure.
Lead complex troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective action development for automation and integration issues.
Review and improve control logic, alarm philosophy, graphics, and configuration quality across multiple sites.
Provide technical leadership for commissioning, startup, retrofits, and upgrades of building automation systems.
Establish and enforce standards for automation architecture, cybersecurity practices, and operational supportability.
Act as the primary technical interface with vendors, system integrators, construction teams, and site stakeholders.
Mentor junior engineers through coaching, design reviews, and sharing best practices in troubleshooting and engineering.
Identify systemic issues to improve standardization, scalability, and reliability across the automation portfolio.
What we're looking for
Candidates must have 6 to 10 years of experience in building automation, controls engineering, industrial automation, or mission-critical facility systems.
Experience with BMS, EPMS, PLC, SCADA, HMI, and industrial networking is required.
A degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls, Computer Engineering, Industrial Automation, or a related field is preferred.
Candidates must be able to read, write, and speak English.
Advanced troubleshooting skills for control logic, OT networks, and facility infrastructure are required.
Experience with major automation ecosystems like Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Ignition, Niagara, or Johnson Controls is preferred.
Knowledge of OT cybersecurity frameworks such as IEC 62443 or NIST 800-82 is preferred.
OEM, platform, or advanced industry certifications in controls, networking, or industrial cybersecurity are strongly preferred.
