TL;DR · Scientist, Systems Engineering (Detection Algorithm Development)

Scientist, Systems Engineering (Detection Algorithm Development) serves as a technical lead focused on developing image and video processing algorithms for space-based EO/IR systems. The role involves performing modeling and simulation to characterize Earth observing systems in LEO, MEO, and GEO orbits while conducting complex trade studies to meet specific customer requirements. Day-to-day responsibilities include implementing custom and OpenCV-based solutions into FPGAs, GPUs, or embedded systems, as well as developing instrument documentation, test procedures, and interface control documents. The position requires proficiency in Python, C/C++, or VHDL, along with experience using tools such as NumPy, SciPy, scikit-learn, PyTorch, CV2, and CUDA. Candidates must possess expertise in EO/IR imagery and phenomenology to solve technical challenges related to low size, weight, and power requirements for space systems.

What you'll do

  • Lead the development of image and video processing algorithms for space-based EO/IR systems.
  • Implement custom and OpenCV-based algorithms on FPGAs, GPUs, and embedded systems.
  • Conduct modeling and simulation activities to characterize Earth observing systems in LEO, MEO, and GEO orbits.
  • Perform complex trade studies using tools like NumPy, SciPy, PyTorch, and CUDA to optimize algorithm performance.
  • Develop technical specifications, interface control documents (ICDs), and test procedures for electro-optical/infrared hardware.
  • Support requirements analysis, decomposition, and traceability throughout the program life cycle.
  • Collaborate with customers to define requirements and develop concepts of operation (CONOPs).

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree with 12 years of experience, a graduate degree with 10 years of experience, or 16 years of experience without a degree.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a secret clearance.
  • At least 5 years of experience in Python, C/C++, or VHDL.
  • Professional experience implementing image/video processing algorithms in FPGAs, GPUs, or embedded systems.
  • Strong background in mathematics or physics (preferred).
  • Experience developing embedded software or firmware (preferred).
  • Ability to read and write C/C++ software (preferred).
  • U.S. citizens.
