The Principal Structural Civil Engineer joins the AES Renewables team as a subject matter expert to support the design, development, and construction of photovoltaic systems, high voltage infrastructure, substations, and grid-scale battery energy storage systems. This role involves reviewing structural plans, evaluating designs for economical construction, performing quality assurance assessments, and providing technical guidance on pile load testing, Lpile analysis, foundation types, and concrete and steel design. The candidate will manage project engineering tasks, coordinate with external vendors, perform site visits to assess issues during construction, and maintain a database of foundation designs. Required expertise includes structural steel pile foundations, reinforced concrete design, and utility-scale infrastructure. Key technical skills include proficiency in Microsoft Office, knowledge of US structural codes, and experience with Lpile or finite element analysis tools like SAP2000 or STAAD.
Provide expert technical support and subject matter expertise for structural designs involving solar PV, high voltage, and battery storage systems.
Review structural plans, engineering calculations, and design packages for compliance with industry codes, standards, and project specifications.
Evaluate geotechnical reports and provide preliminary structural designs for projects in early development stages.
Perform quality control assessments and identify value engineering opportunities for racking, substations, and overhead lines.
Conduct site visits to assess construction issues, perform root-cause analyses, and conduct safety walks.
Maintain a database of foundation designs and analyze design evolution to guide cost and material decisions.
Develop tools, guidance, and training materials to enable other engineering staff to review structural designs independently.
Draft and update structural specifications based on industry trends and lessons learned from past projects.
What we're looking for
Undergraduate degree in Structural Engineering or an equivalent technical field.
10+ years of professional experience in structural engineering.
5+ years of experience with PV and Battery Energy Storage System design and WTG foundation design, or 2+ years of experience with HV Substation and Overhead Line design.
Proficiency in field experience with structural, civil, geotechnical, and/or design build construction.
Experience with Structural Engineering standards and codes in the US.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Master's degree in structural engineering, Lpile, finite element analysis tools, Spanish language skills, or OSHA 10-hr certification (preferred).
