TL;DR · Principal Hardware Architect

As a Principal Hardware Architect, you will join the team developing next-generation custom memory controllers to enhance Cobalt CPU performance. You will be responsible for architecting and developing memory controllers while reviewing technology roadmaps including DDR5, DDR6, LPDDR, HBM, Type 3 CXL-based Memory, RDIMM, MRDIMM, and LP-MRDIMM. Your daily work involves collaborating with micro-architects, verification teams, and performance modeling groups to drive features into production and analyze platform workload results. You will also evaluate vendor IP and identify full stack optimization opportunities within the memory hierarchy. The role requires expertise in SoC memory architecture and familiarity with JEDEC specifications for various memory types. This position focuses on solving complex hardware challenges by designing advanced custom silicon capable of high-performance functions to support large-scale cloud infrastructure and diverse system requirements.

What you'll do

  • Architect and develop next-generation memory controllers for Cobalt CPUs.
  • Evaluate and review memory technology roadmaps including DDR5, DDR6, LPDDR, HBM, and CXL-based technologies.
  • Drive specific features into production by working with micro-architects, verification, and validation teams.
  • Evaluate vendor IP and provide technical recommendations for integration.
  • Develop cycle-accurate models of the controller in collaboration with the Performance Modeling team.
  • Analyze SoC and platform workload results to identify full-stack optimization opportunities within the memory hierarchy.
  • Translate customer use cases and requirements into specific hardware architecture designs.

What we're looking for

  • A Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science and 3+ years of technical engineering experience.
  • A Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science and 6+ years of technical engineering experience.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science and 8+ years of technical engineering experience.
  • Ability to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check every two years.
  • Ability to meet export control regulations including U.S. ITAR, EAR, and EU Dual Use regulations.
  • Proof of citizenship, residency, or other protected status for assessment of eligibility to access export-controlled information.
  • Experience delivering architecture, design, or verification specifications for multiple generations of memory controllers.
  • Familiarity with DDR, HBM, or LPDDR JEDEC specifications and emerging memory technologies.
