The Principal Engineer, Core Infrastructure joins the Technical Strategy & Oversight organization to build foundational systems for OCI. This role focuses on the Autonomous OCI initiative, a greenfield project creating a cloud platform designed to scale with minimal manual intervention through self-healing and resilient services. You will help shape Lightweight Infrastructure, the next-generation runtime and platform layer for compute, storage, networking, identity, observability, and governance. Key responsibilities include architecting scalable distributed systems, optimizing data paths for hyper-scale workloads, and designing fault-tolerant components using redundancy and replication. You will utilize Java, Go, Rust, C/C++, Linux, and kernel programming to manage distributed systems, cloud control planes, and virtualization. The work involves solving complex problems regarding network unreliability, concurrency, and automated infrastructure management to ensure high availability and durability.
Architect and lead the development of scalable, elastic distributed systems for cloud infrastructure.
Optimize code and data paths for high-throughput, hyper-scale workloads and large-scale data processing.
Design fault-tolerant components using redundancy, replication, and automatic failover mechanisms to meet SLOs.
Implement load-shedding, throttling, and rate-limiting to manage network unreliability and service disruptions.
Establish KPIs and build telemetry systems, dashboards, and alerting mechanisms to monitor system health.
Design and execute complex validation tests, including fault injection and brown-out scenarios, to ensure correctness.
Develop Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation tools for patching, updates, and rollbacks.
Implement robust security controls, encryption, and access management for multi-tenant environments.
What we're looking for
BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
6–10+ years of software engineering experience building highly available, scalable distributed systems or cloud infrastructure.
Strong programming skills in Java, Go, Rust, C/C++, or a similar systems or backend language.
Deep experience in distributed systems, cloud control planes, management planes, scheduling, virtualization, storage, networking, security, reliability, or platform automation.
Ability to independently lead the design and delivery of complex, resilient, and observable services.
Strong understanding of failure handling, concurrency, asynchronous workflows, safe retries, and lifecycle management in distributed systems.
Strong debugging and problem-solving skills for complex production and performance issues.
Proficiency in Distributed Systems, Kernel Programming, Linux, and System Programming.
