The Model Maker / Machinist joins the IBM Research team to produce high-accuracy components, fixtures, and prototypes from engineering concepts or detailed drawings. This role involves performing precision machining using manual and CNC milling machines and lathes, as well as executing surface grinding to achieve specific flatness and finish requirements. The candidate will utilize Mastercam for creating and optimizing milling toolpaths while interpreting complex mechanical drawings and GD&T specifications. Day-to-day tasks include machining various materials such as copper, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and plastics while maintaining tight tolerances between 0.0002" and 0.005". Essential skills include proficiency with micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and optical comparators. The role supports the development of advanced technologies by transforming technical designs into physical prototypes through high-quality craftsmanship and precise manufacturing techniques in a collaborative research environment.
