TL;DR · Lead Manufacturing Engineer, Propulsion & Energetics

Lead Manufacturing Engineer, Propulsion & Energetics joins the Space Manufacturing team to oversee the manufacturing and integration of high-consequence hardware for space vehicles. This role involves managing solid rocket motor integration, divert and attitude control systems, thruster installation, and pressurant and fluid systems. The engineer is responsible for ordnance installation, including initiators and pyrotechnic separation systems, while ensuring strict adherence to hazard classification and safety controls. Key responsibilities include authoring work instructions, performing root cause analysis, conducting PFMEA, and driving Design for Manufacturability. The role requires expertise in handling high-consequence hardware under formal explosives safety programs. Essential skills include proficiency with Foundry and Teamcenter tools, as well as experience with technical standards like DESR 6055.09 or ATF 27 CFR. Candidates must navigate complex integration processes involving propulsion partners while ensuring all systems meet rigorous quality and reliability standards.

What you'll do

  • Manage the integration, handling, and installation of solid rocket motors and thruster systems.
  • Oversee the construction and testing of pressurant and fluid systems for propulsion hardware.
  • Lead ordnance installation processes including pyrotechnic systems and flight termination systems under strict safety protocols.
  • Develop manufacturing safety controls and ensure compliance with hazardous material storage and handling regulations.
  • Author work instructions, perform root cause analysis, and conduct process validations for propulsion and ordnance operations.
  • Drive Design for Manufacturability (DfM) to optimize hardware access, handling, and installation during the design phase.
  • Specify and qualify specialized tooling, lift fixtures, and equipment for high-consequence hardware.
  • Serve as the technical interface with partners regarding motor producibility and site integration support.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 8+ years of manufacturing or integration engineering experience in aerospace, space, defense, or another high-reliability industry.
  • 4+ years of hands-on work on propulsion, ordnance, or other energetic hardware.
  • Experience working under a formal explosives or energetics safety program including quantity-distance, two-person discipline, and electrical safing.
  • Hands-on experience in at least two areas: solid rocket motor integration, thruster installation, fluid system construction, or ordnance installation.
  • Experience authoring procedures for hazardous operations on flight or high-consequence hardware.
  • Expertise in root cause analysis (8D, 5-Why, Fishbone), PFMEA, and first article inspection for hazardous processes.
  • Must possess and be able to maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.
  • Formal explosives safety certification or qualification (preferred).
  • Solid rocket motor production or integration experience on a flight program (preferred).
  • Launch site integration experience with range safety approval of hazardous procedures (preferred).
  • Familiarity with standards including DESR 6055.09, DoD 4145.26, ATF 27 CFR, DOT 49 CFR, and AS9100 (preferred).
  • Cleanroom manufacturing experience with contamination control for propellant systems (preferred).
