Hardware Developer Intern 2027 serves as a member of the hardware development engineering team, where you will develop, test, and provide customer support for firmware, semiconductors, and hardware components powering IBM infrastructure like zSystems, Power Systems, Storage, and Quantum Systems. Your daily responsibilities involve tasks such as logic design and verification, physical design, signal and power integrity analysis, microelectronics packaging, circuit design, and thermal testing. To succeed in this role, you should possess knowledge of computer architecture including FPGAs, RISC-V, ARM, and MIPS. The required technical toolkit includes programming languages like C, C++, Python, or Java; hardware description languages such as VHDL and Verilog; and circuit simulation tools like SPICE. You will also utilize CAD tools for 3D modeling while addressing complex challenges in the quantum revolution and AI era.

What you'll do

  • Design, test, and provide customer support for hardware, firmware, and semiconductors.
  • Perform logic (RTL) design, verification, physical design, and analog/IO design.
  • Conduct signal integrity, power integrity, and thermal design analysis.
  • Execute processor, component, and system characterization and validation.
  • Develop and test firmware architectures while performing failure analysis.
  • Manage product quality assurance, specifications, and analytics.
  • Provide technical support for customers and field engineering teams.

What we're looking for

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in a relevant engineering, science, or technology field.
  • Prior project or internship experience in computer hardware or testing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • At least three months of experience designing or manufacturing hardware products (preferred).
  • Basic knowledge of computer hardware/architecture, programming languages, HDLs, and circuit simulation tools (preferred).
  • Proficiency in microprocessor design, CAD tools, 3D modeling, or specific scripting languages (preferred).
  • Familiarity with various hardware architectures such as VLSI, FPGA, MIPS, RISC-V, Arm, x86, or Quantum systems (preferred).
