TL;DR · Lab Infrastructure Design Engineer

The Global Lab Infrastructure Design Engineer joins the Microsoft Lab Services team to support the planning and design of engineering laboratories for product development and research. This service engineering role involves translating product-team requirements into data-informed infrastructure strategies and design specifications for new facilities or modifications. The engineer will evaluate existing sites for power, cooling, networking, security, and capacity while preparing design-intent packages for contractors. Key responsibilities include developing repeatable intake processes, performing build-versus-modify analyses, and defining operational acceptance criteria. To succeed, the candidate must possess expertise in physical infrastructure, high-level networking, and electrical distribution. The role utilizes approved artificial intelligence tools, analytics, scripting, and automation to support capacity planning and documentation. This position solves the challenge of providing secure physical and hybrid environments for hardware engineering and research activities.

What you'll do

  • Translate product team requirements into data-informed infrastructure strategies and design specifications for new laboratories.
  • Evaluate existing facilities for power, cooling, networking, security, and capacity before recommending expansion or construction.
  • Support build-versus-modify decisions using operational data, utilization targets, and lifecycle considerations.
  • Prepare design-intent packages for contractors documenting performance requirements, equipment profiles, risks, and acceptance criteria.
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, and project managers to integrate requirements into construction and commissioning phases.
  • Use AI tools, analytics, and automation to perform capacity evaluations and generate technical documentation.
  • Define operational acceptance criteria regarding safety, serviceability, monitoring, and lifecycle requirements for new sites.
  • Communicate technical tradeoffs, risks, and infrastructure recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering or technology field and 3+ years of technical experience in systems, network, service, or software engineering.
  • Alternatively, 3+ years of experience evaluating power, cooling, physical space, cabling, or networking for labs, datacenters, or research environments.
  • Ability to pass Microsoft Cloud Background Check and meet government security screening requirements.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% for site assessments, design reviews, and project coordination.
  • Master's degree in a relevant field and 6+ years of technical experience (preferred).
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 8+ years of technical experience (preferred).
  • Experience supporting R&D labs, high-density computing, AI infrastructure, or liquid-cooled equipment (preferred).
  • Knowledge of electrical distribution, HVAC systems, structured cabling, and networking requirements (preferred).
