TL;DR · Federal Compliance & Security Architect

As a Principal Federal Compliance & Security Architect, you will serve as the chief technical authority for the federal platform footprint. You will bridge high-level compliance directives with robust cloud engineering to maintain FedRAMP Moderate and High, and Department of Defense (DoD) Impact Level 5 authorizations. Your daily responsibilities include defining architectural standards, performing governance reviews, and developing risk mitigation strategies. You will translate NIST SP 800-53, DoD SRG, and FIPS requirements into scalable cloud architectures across AWS GovCloud and Microsoft Azure Government environments. The role requires expertise in security architecture, systems design, and federal compliance initiatives. You will author System Security Plans, conduct code reviews, and act as the primary technical liaison to third-party assessment organizations and federal officials to ensure secure transitions into production federal environments while managing technical debt and infrastructure scalability.

What you'll do

  • Design and maintain high-availability cloud architectures that meet FedRAMP High and DoD IL5 authorization standards.
  • Translate NIST 800-53, FIPS, and DoD SRG requirements into scalable technical designs across AWS GovCloud and Azure Government.
  • Establish architectural principles and reusable design frameworks to provide engineering teams with compliant-by-default guidance.
  • Author high-impact architecture specifications, System Security Plans (SSPs), and portfolio strategy documents for executive and regulatory audiences.
  • Conduct rigorous code reviews and root-cause analyses to resolve technical debt and ensure alignment with federal security mandates.
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison to third-party assessment organizations (3PAOs) and federal authorizing officials during audit cycles.
  • Advise executive leadership on strategic architectural choices while balancing delivery velocity against federal compliance risks.
  • Mentor and coach architects and engineering leaders in technical strategy, business acumen, and complex problem-solving.

What we're looking for

  • 12+ years of experience in security architecture, cloud engineering, or systems design.
  • 5+ years leading major federal compliance initiatives including FedRAMP Moderate/High and DoD Impact Level 5 (IL5).
  • Mastery of NIST SP 800-53, NIST SP 800-37, FIPS 140-2/140-3, and DoD Cloud Computing Security Requirements Guide.
  • Experience designing and securing cloud architectures in AWS GovCloud or Microsoft Azure Government.
  • Experience leading technical teams through 3PAO assessments and FedRAMP PMO or DoD AO authorization cycles.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to C-level executives and federal officials.
  • Relevant certifications such as CISSP, CCSP, or CISM (preferred).
  • Active or eligible-for United States federal security clearance (Secret or Top Secret) (preferred).
