Engineering Manager, Edge Infrastructure

What you'll do

• Lead and grow a senior engineering team responsible for Shopify's global edge infrastructure.
• Translate high-level business goals into technical visions and executable projects for the team.
• Design and own the resilience of edge systems to ensure graceful behavior during internet component failures.
• Drive traffic and bot management by evolving DDoS protections and distinguishing abusive automation from beneficial bots.
• Set technical direction for routing, DNS, TLS, certificate management, and underlying network protocols.
• Balance cost-to-serve against performance value when shaping traffic policies for automated traffic.
• Prepare the edge infrastructure for high-traffic peak events like Black Friday Cyber Monday.
• Coach senior engineers on technical depth and provide guidance for those moving into leadership roles.

What we're looking for

• You have experience leading engineers while remaining deeply involved in technical work and architecture.
• You possess a hands-on understanding of edge or traffic infrastructure, including how requests travel from browsers to systems.
• You have depth in CDNs at scale, reverse proxies, L4/L7 load balancing, anycast, and origin architecture.
• You have command of network protocols, DNS, TLS, mTLS, certificate management, and PKI.
• You have experience with network security, including WAF, DDoS/DoS mitigation, rate limiting, and bot management.
• You have built or owned a platform layer and can speak to specific design decisions and trade-offs.
• You have a software engineering background where you have written and shipped production code.
• You have experience growing people and helping engineers develop into leadership roles.
