JOB TITLE: Director, Embedded Software Engineering, Amazon Leo The Director of Embedded Software Engineering will lead mission-critical embedded software development for Amazon Leo's satellite bus systems. This leader will own the end-to-end software stack, including flight software, real-time operating systems, avionics, and on-orbit software validation. Key responsibilities include architecting software for constrained hardware environments, managing hardware bring-up, and overseeing systems testing using Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation frameworks. The role requires expertise in C/C++, ADA, Python, and Matlab to develop solutions for custom ASICs and FPGAs. The candidate must navigate complex satellite bus requirements such as attitude determination, power management, and fault detection. This position solves the technical challenge of coordinating 600+ unique processors in space, ensuring high reliability and performance for satellite spacecraft systems from manufacturing through end-of-life operations.

What you'll do

Define and implement end-to-end embedded software architecture for satellite bus systems.
Lead development of real-time operating system (RTOS) implementations and Linux OS solutions for spacecraft.
Drive hardware bring-up processes including boot, hardware verification, and comprehensive testing.
Design and implement control systems, redundancy management, and fault detection, isolation, and recovery (FDIR) software.
Own the systems test strategy and execution using Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation frameworks.
Manage and scale a large embedded software engineering organization of over 100 people.
Partner with hardware engineering teams to integrate components from design through launch.
Create technical documentation for worldwide regulatory bodies and oversee software quality for production at scale.

What we're looking for

Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related STEM discipline.
US Citizenship, Permanent Resident (Green Card), or Political Asylum status.
Minimum 10 years of experience as a manager of managers leading multiple engineering teams.
Proven track record building and scaling engineering organizations of 70+ people from scratch to production.
Minimum 10 years of experience in embedded software design and development for mission-critical systems.
Hands-on experience with embedded software architecture, RTOS implementation, and hardware-software integration in constrained environments.
Strong Unix/Linux and systems development skills.
Experience with aerospace and avionics systems, flight software, and on-orbit software testing (preferred).
