The Broadcast IT Field Engineer provides professional support in a fast-paced, 24/7 field newsgathering and production environment. This role involves planning and executing engineering aspects for live productions and remotes, including setting up and operating Fiber, IP, and Satellite transmission links, video and audio routing, and local communications. The engineer performs quality control, maintenance, and repair of television remote broadcast equipment while providing hardware and software support for laptops, printers, and connectivity devices. Key technologies include SNG satellite uplink/downlink systems, microwave, video encoding, A/V routers, media decks, NLE edit systems, and data networking infrastructure like routers and switches. The role addresses the technical challenges of an increasingly broadcast IP and IT-centric environment, ensuring reliable signal processing and transcoding for remote productions while managing complex project integration tasks within a team-based framework.
Plan and execute engineering aspects for live productions, remotes, and field projects.
Set up and operate Fiber, IP, and Satellite transmission links for broadcast.
Perform maintenance and repair on video/audio routing and remote communication equipment.
Provide hardware and software support for local computing devices like laptops and printers.
Participate in the design, installation, and integration of complex broadcast IP and IT networks.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical problems in a fast-paced 24/7 production environment.
Manage project workflows and provide technical oversight to staff during small remotes.
What we're looking for
Must have at least 4 years of experience in television production, including troubleshooting broadcast equipment, IT systems, and RF/satellite transmission.
Must possess a 4-year technical degree in electronics or equivalent education and training.
Must be able to physically lift and move equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
Must have proficiency with MS Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Visio.
Must demonstrate expertise in analyzing and solving complex technical problems in fast-paced environments.
Must possess strong communication skills and the ability to work independently in a team-based environment.
Preferred experience includes working knowledge of IP video transport and familiarity with brands like Sony or Harmonic.
Preferred qualifications include IT/Network certifications, formal ITSM training, and proficiency with AutoCAD or MS Project.
