The 2027 PhD Optical & Photonics Engineering Intern/Co-Op will join a multidisciplinary engineering team to develop next-generation optical, photonic, and high-speed interconnect technologies for advanced computing platforms. The role involves supporting the design, simulation, validation, and characterization of photonic integrated circuits, optical transceivers, and subsystems while performing laboratory testing and performance analysis of electrical systems. Day-to-day responsibilities include data collection, automation, modeling, and technical reporting to improve design performance and engineering efficiency. Candidates should possess expertise in silicon photonics, SerDes technologies, signal integrity, or mixed-signal circuit design. Required skills include proficiency in Python or MATLAB for technical computing and experience with tools such as oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and optical spectrum analyzers. Support the design, simulation, and validation of photonic integrated circuits and optical transceivers.
Perform laboratory testing and performance analysis of optical and electrical systems using standard instrumentation.
Execute data collection, modeling, and automation activities to improve design performance and engineering efficiency.
Conduct characterization of photonic devices and analyze signal integrity for high-speed interconnects.

What we're looking for
Currently pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Photonics, Applied Physics, Optoelectronics, Physics, Optical Communications, or a related technical field.
Experience, coursework, or research in silicon photonics, optical communications, high-speed digital communications, signal integrity, analog/mixed-signal design, or fiber-optic networking (preferred).
Experience with engineering simulation, modeling, laboratory testing, or data analysis techniques.
Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, or similar programming languages for technical computing, automation, or data analysis.
Exposure to photonic design, simulation, characterization, or semiconductor technologies (preferred).
Familiarity with optical and electrical test equipment such as oscilloscopes, network analyzers, or tunable lasers (plus).
