The 2027 PhD Photonics Engineering Intern/Co-Op will join a multidisciplinary team to develop next-generation optical, photonic, and high-speed interconnect technologies for advanced computing platforms and AI infrastructure. The intern will support the design, simulation, validation, and characterization of photonic integrated circuits, optical transceivers, and optical subsystems. Day-to-day responsibilities include laboratory testing, performance analysis, data collection, and automation to improve design performance and engineering efficiency. Candidates should possess experience in silicon photonics, optical communications, signal integrity, or mixed-signal circuit design. Required technical skills include engineering simulation, modeling, and data analysis using Python or MATLAB. The role involves using laboratory instrumentation like oscilloscopes and optical spectrum analyzers to solve complex technical challenges in high-speed electrical interconnects and fiber-optic networking technologies.
Support the design, simulation, validation, and characterization of photonic integrated circuits and optical transceivers.
Perform laboratory testing and performance analysis of optical and electrical systems using industry-standard instrumentation.
Execute data collection, modeling, and automation activities to improve design performance and engineering efficiency.
Conduct photonic device characterization, signal integrity analysis, and mixed-signal technology evaluations.

What we're looking for
Currently pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Photonics, Applied Physics, Optoelectronics, Physics, Optical Communications, or a related technical field.
Experience, coursework, or research in silicon photonics, optical communications, high-speed digital communications, signal integrity, analog/mixed-signal design, or fiber-optic networking (preferred).
Experience with engineering simulation, modeling, laboratory testing, or data analysis techniques.
Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, or similar programming languages for technical computing, automation, or data analysis.
Exposure to photonic design, simulation, characterization, or semiconductor technologies (preferred).
Familiarity with optical and electrical test equipment such as oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and optical spectrum analyzers (preferred).
Interest in advancing optical, photonic, and high-speed interconnect technologies for next-generation computing and AI infrastructure.
Ability to work full-time (40 hours a week) onsite in San Jose, CA or Santa Clara, CA.
