TL;DR · Weld Engineer III

Weld Engineer III - (E3) serves as a technical lead responsible for weld process development, qualification, and continuous improvement for precision mechanical, vacuum, and gas/chemical delivery assemblies used in semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The role involves developing and documenting Welding Procedure Specifications and Procedure Qualification Records for orbital GTAW and manual GTAW processes on stainless steel and specialty alloys like Hastelloy and Inconel. Key responsibilities include qualifying welders and equipment, performing root-cause analysis using fishbone or 5-why methods, and overseeing nondestructive testing such as dye penetrant and helium leak tests. The position requires expertise in metallurgy, lean principles, and automation to ensure high-purity fabrication standards. Candidates must navigate complex requirements including ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1/D1.6, and SEMI standards while utilizing tools like SolidWorks or Creo to solve critical manufacturing challenges within a high-precision environment.

What you'll do

  • Develop, qualify, and document Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR).
  • Define and validate weld parameters for new product introductions and design changes.
  • Lead welder and welding-operator performance qualification programs to certify personnel and equipment.
  • Perform root-cause analysis on weld nonconformances and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Specify and review nondestructive and destructive testing methods to verify weld integrity.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and internal teams to improve process capability and resolve quality issues.
  • Author engineering specifications, work instructions, and training materials for welding processes.
  • Support cost reduction, cycle-time reduction, and yield improvement initiatives across fabrication lines.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science/Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • 4 to 7 years of experience in welding, manufacturing, or process engineering is typically required.
  • Experience with orbital and manual GTAW welding of stainless steel and exotic alloys is required.
  • Demonstrated experience developing WPS/PQR documentation and leading welder qualification programs is required.
  • Working knowledge of ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1/D1.6, and SEMI high-purity gas/chemical delivery standards is required.
  • Familiarity with NDT methods such as dye penetrant, radiographic, and helium leak testing is required.
  • Experience with root-cause analysis tools including 8D, FMEA, DOE, and statistical process control is required.
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification is preferred.
