TL;DR · Weld Engineer II

Weld Engineer II The Weld Engineer II joins the manufacturing team to own weld process development, qualification, and continuous improvement for precision mechanical, vacuum, and gas/chemical delivery assemblies used in semiconductor manufacturing equipment. This role involves developing and documenting Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) for orbital GTAW and manual GTAW processes on stainless steel and specialty alloys like Hastelloy and Inconel. The engineer will lead welder performance qualification programs, perform root-cause analysis using fishbone or 5-why methods, and oversee nondestructive testing including dye penetrant and helium leak tests. Key technical requirements include knowledge of ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1/D1.6, and SEMI standards, alongside proficiency in metallurgical evaluation and statistical process control. The role addresses critical manufacturing challenges within high-purity, ultra-clean fabrication environments to ensure the integrity of complex delivery systems.

What you'll do

  • Develop, qualify, and document Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) for various welding processes.
  • Define and validate weld parameters for new product introductions and design changes in collaboration with engineering teams.
  • Lead welder and equipment performance qualification programs to ensure compliance with internal and industry standards.
  • Perform root-cause analysis on weld nonconformances and field failures to implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Specify and review nondestructive and destructive testing methods to verify the integrity of welds.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing teams to resolve quality issues and improve process capability.
  • Author and maintain engineering specifications, work instructions, and training materials for welding processes.
  • Support cost reduction, cycle-time reduction, and yield improvement initiatives across fabrication lines.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science/Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • 2 to 4 years of relevant experience in welding, manufacturing, or process engineering is required.
  • Experience with orbital and manual GTAW welding of stainless steel and exotic alloys is required.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and qualifying WPS/PQR documentation and leading welder qualification programs is required.
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1/D1.6, and SEMI high-purity gas/chemical delivery standards is required.
  • Experience with root-cause and quality tools such as 8D, FMEA, DOE, and statistical process control (SPC) is required.
  • Familiarity with NDT methods including dye penetrant, radiographic, and helium leak testing is required.
