Transport Network Engineer II
The Transport Network Engineer II joins the Global Solutions Management-Operations team to provide sustainment, maintenance, and problem management for Department of Defense networks. This role involves designing and engineering network systems, developing methods of procedure, performing hardware upgrades, and managing technical refreshes. Day-to-day responsibilities include fault isolation, root cause analysis, and troubleshooting across various transport platforms while coordinating with vendors and customers to ensure reliable service availability. The position requires expertise in SONET Optical/Fiber Transport, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), Time Division Multiplexing (TDM), and cryptographic systems. Candidates must be proficient with specific hardware including CIENA 6500, CIENA Corestream, Cisco NCS2K, and SYCAMORE ODXC. The role addresses the critical challenge of maintaining secure, uninterrupted communication for national security organizations by managing complex Layer 1 and Layer 2 network infrastructures and ensuring accurate documentation within mission support databases.
Design and modify network architecture to support hardware and software technical refreshes.
Install new network hardware components on operational nodes and monitor for traffic impacts.
Perform fault isolation, analysis, and troubleshooting across SONET, DWDM, TDM, and cryptographic systems.
Conduct root cause analysis in coordination with other engineers, vendors, and customers.
Maintain the Mission Support Services database to reflect real-time network status.
Coordinate maintenance windows by collecting site data and dispatching technicians for authorized service interruptions.
Manage ServiceNow tickets with accurate documentation of troubleshooting and implementation efforts.
Provide technical recommendations for efficient network configurations based on engineering documents and experience.
What we're looking for
Must possess an active Secret security clearance.
Must possess DoD 8750 certification at IAT level II, Security+ CE or equivalent.
Must have a BS degree and 2-4 years of experience, or a Masters with less than 2 years of experience (or equivalent).
Proficiency in one or more Transport platforms including CIENA 6500, CIENA Corestream, Cisco NCS2K, CISCO MSPP, SYCAMORE ODXC, or XTERA.
Experience analyzing section, line, and path events on Optical networks.
Experience with end-to-end system loopback testing and troubleshooting on Transport networks.
Experience working with service providers/enterprise systems using CISCO/CIENA devices and ports for DWDM and SONET technologies.
Proficiency in Ciena and/or Cisco configuration, design, and troubleshooting (preferred); experience with Power systems, Network Timing, and Crypto (preferred).
