TL;DR · Transmission Planning Modeling Engineer

The Transmission Planning Modeling Engineer joins the East Transmission Planning Modeling organization to support the PJM region. This role is responsible for developing, maintaining, and validating transmission system models used for planning, reliability assessments, operational studies, and NERC compliance activities. The engineer will model infrastructure such as lines, transformers, and generators across various voltage levels while incorporating future network changes like load growth and facility upgrades. Day-to-day tasks include performing data validation, resolving discrepancies, and coordinating with internal stakeholders and external entities to ensure accurate system representation. Key technical tools include PSS-ODMS, Siemens PSS®E, ASPEN OneLiner, and TARA. The role requires expertise in power flow, short circuit, and stability assessments, as well as knowledge of inverter-based resources like solar and wind technologies, while ensuring compliance with NERC Reliability Standards through rigorous data quality management and reporting.

What you'll do

  • Develop, maintain, and validate transmission system models using tools like PSS-ODMS and PSS®E.
  • Model infrastructure components including lines, transformers, generators, and breakers across various voltage levels.
  • Create future network models incorporating load growth, generation changes, and planned system upgrades.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external entities to collect and validate technical equipment data.
  • Perform automated and manual data validation to identify errors and resolve inconsistencies in modeling practices.
  • Support PJM planning processes by managing model reviews, submittals, and responding to data requests.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC Reliability Standards regarding data quality and model accuracy.
  • Drive continuous improvement by developing documentation, training materials, and standardized engineering processes.

What we're looking for

  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program is required (or a Master's/PhD with 2 years of experience).
  • An Engineering Technology degree with a Professional Engineer (PE) license can satisfy the education requirement.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is preferred.
  • Experience developing, maintaining, and validating transmission planning models using PSS-ODMS, PSS®E, ASPEN OneLiner, TARA, or similar tools is preferred.
  • Experience supporting power flow, short circuit, stability, or reliability assessments using transmission planning models is preferred.
  • Knowledge of inverter-based resources (solar/wind) and synchronous generation modeling is preferred.
  • Experience working with PJM planning processes or regional transmission organization data exchanges is preferred.
  • Experience supporting NERC Reliability Standards and compliance programs is preferred.
