TL;DR · Senior Technical Writer, Mission Autonomy

Sr. Technical Writer, Mission Autonomy joins the Mission Autonomy team to create and maintain technical documentation for software used to command and control collaborative combat aircraft. This role involves partnering with engineering, flight test, and platform integration teams to produce user-focused manuals, API reference catalogs, architecture documents, and deployment guides. The position requires managing a dual-track documentation pipeline: an internal docs-as-code workflow utilizing Git, Markdown, and static site generators like Docusaurus or MkDocs, and a formal S1000D structured content environment using RapidAuthor. Key responsibilities include defining technical writing standards, managing the documentation lifecycle, and ensuring compliance with government reference architectures. The role addresses the critical challenge of making complex autonomous systems understandable for operators and integrators while ensuring that software behavior, safety protocols, and configuration requirements are clearly communicated across various hardware and software platforms.

What you'll do

  • Create user-focused documentation for autonomy behaviors, operating modes, and failure handling to help operators predict system responses.
  • Develop technical reference materials including API catalogs, architecture diagrams, and configuration manuals based on source code and schemas.
  • Maintain a "docs-as-code" pipeline while ensuring content remains consistent across S1000D structured authoring environments.
  • Manage the documentation roadmap by identifying stakeholders, setting milestones, and ensuring contract deliverables meet government requirements.
  • Support flight test events by capturing procedures and converting test results into updated technical manuals and reports.
  • Build internal tools, style guides, and training programs to scale technical writing capabilities across the organization.
  • Coordinate with engineering and product teams to ensure documentation accurately reflects software updates and integration requirements.

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years of experience generating technical documentation for software or software-intensive systems.
  • Experience reading engineering documentation including interface/message definitions, schemas, and requirements while being comfortable reading source code.
  • Experience using various content authoring tools, including word editors and specialized software like Arbortext or RapidAuthor.
  • Working knowledge of S1000D structured authoring, including data module development against a Common Source Data Base.
  • Proficiency in developer toolchains including Git-based version control, Markdown/MDX, and CI-driven documentation pipelines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with an emphasis on technical subjects.
  • Must be eligible for Secret or higher security clearance (US).
  • Experience in Aerospace and Defense, uncrewed systems, or AI/ML software is preferred.
