The Scientist, Systems Engineering role serves as a Systems Architect and Advanced Concepts Engineer within the satellite ground systems portfolio. This position sits at the intersection of technical solutioning and business capture, where the individual will develop reference architectures for multi-mission ground systems including command and control, mission data processing, antenna management, and mission operations. Key responsibilities include leading trade studies for on-premises, cloud-native, and hybrid architectures while translating customer requirements into cost-effective solutions. The role involves collaborating with software, cybersecurity, and cloud engineering teams to ensure technical feasibility. Candidates must possess expertise in satellite ground systems architecture, Kubernetes orchestration, and FISMA/NIST-aligned security. The work focuses on modernization opportunities for civil space agency and defense/intelligence community customers, requiring skills in proposal development, requirements decomposition, and technical risk assessment for complex orbital infrastructure.
Develop and evolve reference architectures for multi-mission satellite ground systems including command, control, and data processing.
Lead technical trade studies to evaluate on-premises, cloud-native, and hybrid architecture approaches for modernization efforts.
Translate customer requirements and RFP evaluation criteria into cost-effective solution architectures.
Perform systems engineering activities including requirements decomposition, interface definition, and technical risk assessment.
Partner with business development leads to shape technical win strategies and customer-facing messaging.
Author technical content for RFI responses, white papers, capability statements, and proposal volumes.
Conduct competitive assessments by benchmarking proposed solutions against known and anticipated competitors.
Present solution concepts and defend technical approaches during internal review boards.
What we're looking for
Bachelor's degree with 12 years of experience, a graduate degree with 10 years, or 16 years of experience without a degree.
Experience developing or contributing to system architectures for civil space agency and/or defense/intelligence community programs.
Experience supporting proposal development, capture activities, or customer-facing technical exchanges.
Experience in satellite ground systems architecture, command and control, mission data processing, antenna management, or mission operations (preferred).
Experience with cloud-native ground system architectures such as containerized microservices or Kubernetes orchestration (preferred).
Familiarity with Government contracting models for ground systems services (preferred).
Experience with FISMA/NIST-aligned security architecture for satellite ground systems (preferred).
