TL;DR · Quantum Materials R&D Engineer

The Quantum Materials R&D Engineer joins the Quantum Hardware team to support next-generation quantum computing technologies by developing, characterizing, and optimizing advanced materials and processes. This hands-on role involves extensive laboratory work focused on superconducting thin films, interconnects, and solder systems. The engineer will perform material deposition, fabrication, and failure analysis while investigating loss mechanisms like interfacial scattering and grain boundaries. Key responsibilities include designing experiments using purpose-built test vehicles, performing electrical, structural, and chemical analyses, and utilizing metrology tools such as XPS, SIMS, FIB/TEM cross-sections, XRD, and XRF. The role requires expertise in metallization and semiconductor fabrication processes to improve device yield and reliability. Candidates must possess strong skills in data-driven problem solving and the ability to manage complex experimental datasets while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to integrate new materials into advanced packaging solutions.

What you'll do

  • Develop and optimize advanced packaging interconnects, metal thin films, and solder systems to improve device performance.
  • Investigate and mitigate material loss mechanisms such as interfacial scattering, grain boundaries, and chemical inhomogeneities.
  • Design and execute experiments using purpose-built test vehicles to evaluate material behavior.
  • Perform electrical, structural, and chemical analyses using tools like XPS, SIMS, FIB/TEM, XRD, and XRF.
  • Analyze complex experimental datasets using statistical methods to identify root causes and drive process improvements.
  • Identify technical risks and guide material selection decisions for integration into fabrication processes.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of experimental procedures, process development activities, and test results.
  • Present technical findings and project updates to internal stakeholders and leadership.

What we're looking for

  • A Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field is required.
  • A Master's degree in a relevant field with 3+ years of industry experience is an acceptable educational qualification.
  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with 5+ years of industry experience is an acceptable educational qualification.
  • A Doctorate in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the characterization and development of superconductors, metallic thin films, and/or solder systems is required.
  • Candidates must possess expertise in materials characterization, data-driven problem solving, and independent experimental design.
  • Preferred experience includes performing electrical measurements on superconducting materials and using tools like XPS, SIMS, FIB, and TEM.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication processes and cleanroom environments is preferred.
