TL;DR · Principal Quantum Materials Engineer

The Principal Quantum Materials Engineer joins the Microsoft Quantum team to lead the development of superconductor and dielectric materials essential for topological qubit performance and scalability. This role involves defining thin film deposition protocols for complex superconductor-semiconductor heterostructures while managing precise control over interfaces, composition, strain, band offsets, and defect density. The engineer will design data-driven experiments to link deposition conditions to device outcomes, provide technical judgment on material tradeoffs, and lead the development of in-situ diagnostics like RHEED and spectroscopy. Key skills include expertise in thin film deposition techniques such as MBE, ALD, or reactive sputtering, alongside characterization methods like ellipsometry and X-ray diffraction. Additionally, the role requires utilizing AI tools for accelerated discovery, experiment planning, and data interpretation to solve complex challenges in quantum information technology and material science.

What you'll do

  • Develop and refine thin film deposition protocols for complex superconductor-semiconductor heterostructures and semiconductor-dielectric interfaces.
  • Control material properties such as composition, strain, band offsets, and defect density to improve qubit performance.
  • Execute data-driven experiments to link deposition conditions to specific device outcomes and fabrication decisions.
  • Design, build, and maintain thin film deposition systems and in-situ diagnostics like RHEED and spectroscopy.
  • Integrate new diagnostic tools and capabilities to enable next-generation material performance.
  • Provide technical leadership to cross-functional teams to resolve materials-related bottlenecks in the development cycle.
  • Utilize AI tools and agents to accelerate discovery, experiment planning, log analysis, and knowledge retrieval.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree plus 8 years experience, Master's plus 6 years, or Doctorate plus 3 years in a relevant scientific field.
  • Ability to pass Microsoft Cloud Background Checks and meet export control requirements (ITAR/EAR).
  • Provide proof of citizenship or U.S. permanent residency for export-controlled information access.
  • Experience with thin film deposition techniques such as MBE, ALD, or reactive sputtering.
  • Experience with structural characterization techniques like ellipsometry, XRD, AFM, XPS, or TEM.
  • Expertise in engineering electronic properties of metal-semiconductor interfaces and superconductor-semiconductor hybrid materials.
  • Ability to leverage AI tools for research gathering, performance modeling, and task automation.
  • Ability to design and build AI agents/copilots for experiment setup, log triage, and knowledge retrieval.
