TL;DR · Quantum Algorithms Theory Intern

As a Quantum Algorithms Theory Intern 2027, you will join the Theory of Quantum Algorithms team to discover and develop new quantum algorithms for scientifically and practically meaningful problems. You will focus on algorithms designed for fault-tolerant quantum computers, specifically investigating research questions in areas such as quantum simulation, differential equations, and quantum approaches to learning and testing. Your daily work involves characterizing potential quantum speed-ups against state-of-the-art classical methods using tools from computational complexity theory while documenting findings for peer-reviewed publication. The role requires expertise in quantum information theory, linear algebra, and Python programming, including the use of NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, and Qiskit. You will address technical challenges related to fault-tolerant quantum architectures, error correction, and compilation to solve complex problems in the field of quantum computing.

What you'll do

  • Investigate a well-defined research question in quantum algorithms to produce original theoretical contributions.
  • Develop new quantum algorithms for scientifically and practically meaningful problems.
  • Characterize potential quantum speed-ups by comparing candidate algorithms against state-of-the-art classical methods.
  • Use tools from computational complexity theory to analyze algorithmic performance.
  • Evaluate how algorithmic ideas connect to implementations suited for fault-tolerant quantum architectures.
  • Document research findings to produce results suitable for peer-reviewed publications or conference submissions.

What we're looking for

  • Must hold a Bachelor's degree.
  • Preferred candidates should hold a Master's degree.
  • Must be enrolled in an academic graduate program in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Must have coursework or research experience in quantum algorithms, quantum information theory, computational complexity, and linear algebra.
  • Must demonstrate experience performing independent theoretical research through projects, a thesis, or publications.
  • Must have experience with at least one general-purpose programming language such as Python.
  • Preferred experience includes proficiency in scientific Python libraries (NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib) and Qiskit.
  • Preferred experience includes familiarity with Git/GitHub, AI research tools, and fault-tolerant quantum computing concepts.
