As a Principal Process Development Engineer- Laser, you will join the engineering team to lead the development of laser-based processes through release to manufacturing. You will be responsible for developing and improving processes specifically involving laser joining and cutting of metal and glass materials. Your daily work involves coordinating risk burn down, performing problem-solving experiments using DRM and DFSS methodologies, and managing validation activities including requirements flow down and monitoring strategies. To succeed, you must utilize technical skills in laser systems, optical components, G-code programming, and statistical analysis tools like Minitab or JMP. You will also manage equipment scouting, characterization, and yield monitoring. This role focuses on the manufacturing of medical technologies by ensuring that new processes are robust, stable, and compliant with safety regulations for patient use.
Develop laser-based processes for joining and cutting metal and glass materials through to manufacturing release.
Lead the innovation, development, and optimization of new manufacturing concepts, processes, and procedures.
Execute risk burn down and problem-solving experiments using DRM/DFSS and data-driven methods.
Manage validation activities including requirements flow down, monitoring strategies, and regulatory compliance.
Perform equipment scouting, selection, qualification, and characterization for laser systems.
Conduct process characterization to ensure stability and maturity before manufacturing release.
Implement and manage yield monitoring systems and perform root cause analysis on production issues.
Maintain all necessary documentation in accordance with quality system regulations.
What we're looking for
Bachelor’s degree plus 7 years experience, advanced degree plus 5 years experience, or PhD with 3 years experience in laser systems and optical components.
Advanced degree in Physics, Optics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar discipline (preferred).
Experience in laser applications including selection, optics package selection, joining, cutting, and marking (preferred).
Experience with G-code or other programming languages for laser system recipe development (preferred).
Experience with DRM/Design for Six Sigma, Lean Sigma, or Green/Black Belt Lean Sigma certification (preferred).
Knowledge of DOE, statistical analysis methods, and data analysis tools like Minitab or JMP (preferred).
Experience in developing processes from concept to manufacturing transfer or working in high-volume manufacturing environments (preferred).
Work authorization at the time of hire and for the duration of employment.
