TL;DR · Principal Mechatronics Engineer, Space Special Programs

Principal Mechatronics Engineer, Space Special Programs joins the Space Special Programs team to develop, test, and operate spacecraft and space systems. This role involves designing, analyzing, and testing complex electro-mechanical systems, including optical systems, batteries, mechanisms, control systems, and sensors. The engineer will execute rapid evaluations of engineering concepts, build prototypes, analyze failures, and manage vendor relationships while mentoring the engineering team on small spacecraft design. Key requirements include over 20 years of mechanical and mechanism design experience, at least 10 years designing for space systems, and proficiency in 3-D CAD. The role requires expertise in assembling components for zero-gravity environments, familiarity with launch environments, and mastery of engineering first principles. Candidates must be able to navigate the technical challenges of developing mission-critical capabilities within a complex, evolving space architecture.

What you'll do

  • Design, analyze, implement, and test complex electro-mechanical systems including optical systems, batteries, and sensors.
  • Develop solutions for both blue-sky engineering problems and specific mission requirements through analysis and experimentation.
  • Build prototypes, perform failure analysis, and transition successful projects into production environments.
  • Mentor junior engineers on spacecraft design, testing methodologies, and technical best practices.
  • Manage the development roadmap for core technologies, subsystems, and complete space systems.
  • Participate in design reviews, integration campaigns, and launch-site or on-orbit operations.
  • Identify and manage early relationships with industrial partners and vendors.
  • Support critical hardware demonstrations with customers as required.

What we're looking for

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Top Secret security clearance.
  • BS, MS, or PhD in an engineering field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 20+ years of mechanical and mechanism design experience in a professional setting.
  • 10+ years designing systems for spacecraft and associated space systems.
  • Experience in ground-up system design and any 3-D CAD.
  • Hands-on assembly, prototyping, testing, and performance characterization of mechanisms designed for 0g but in a 1g environment.
  • Experience designing and building very small mechanisms, components, and systems.
  • Familiarity with launch environments, range safety, and system integration efforts.
  • Experience machining and modifying mechanical components (preferred).
  • Familiarity with designing MGSE to support spacecraft testing and development (preferred).
  • Experience with Electro-Mechanical design concepts at the interface between electrical and mechanical components (preferred).
  • Practical experience with electrical engineering tools like oscilloscopes, power supplies, and multimeters (preferred).
  • 3+ years of experience working in a classified environment (preferred).
